In my never ending quest for my next car, my attention has shifted to Honda now that I’m working at a Honda dealer. I have an NC now so I’m looking at either a new civic si coupe (possibly non-si, I really dislike the wing and am looking for something less sporty than the Miata) or an 8th or 9th gen accord v6 coupe, probably a 2016-17 as I want something newer and I see used ones around 22k but by purchase time I expect all the new ones to be gone. I’m leaning more towards the accord, more mature styling and a little comfier while gaining some straight line speed. Any common issues with any of these? The newer turbo motors worry me a little but not looking to buy for at least a year. What about popular mods? Not looking to go crazy I’ve barely modded my NC, just want to get the most out of the last true muscle car.

Haven’t heard of any issues with either one, although the turbo motors on the Civic are still pretty new. The J-series V6 in the Accord was initially designed in the mid-late 90s so all the kinks have long been worked out. Although since it is a 90s design it still has a timing belt as opposed to a chain as the newer engines have.

The most mods I ever saw on one was muffler removal, nice rims, and lowered a little(probably springs). It sounded awesome and looked good, didn’t really need anything else.

Yeah realistically that’s the most i would ever do and probably more than I’d actually ever get around too. My NC was lowered on mazdaspeed springs and a roadster sport exhaust when I bought it and thats where it sits today minus some cosmetic/convenience mods.

Not currently I don’t think, my hope is for an STi-esque delete option next year. Otherwise you could remove it and fill/paint the trunk, or swap with a non-si in the same color which could be an option if somebody on a forum or something wants it. It’s not an inherently bad wing and I could live with it for a while I think, the profile of the coupe without it just really reminds me of my old crx and I like it way more that way.

Yeah i figured I’d have a year or two to see what issues arise in the turbos, but I’m leaning towards accord now. I’m a decently skilled tech so timing belt is something I could handle if I even keep the car that long, which based on my track record is extremely unlikely, my record currently is around 40k on a car.

Here are some tsb’s, they could indicate what problems you might run into. But it does not necessarily mean they will ever occur. A good reliable car will still have tsb’s.

8th gens still have the Honda 5 speed auto and some VCM issues. I think a 9th gen would be the better choice, it’s got a revised VCM system and 6 speed.
If you want a manual, a 9th gen with the 6 cut and 6 spd would be a nice unicorn.

I take it you’re looking for a manual, right? They aren’t easy to find, but some of them have the optional HFP package that upgraded the suspension.

Yeah I think I’m leaning to a ‘16-17, a v6 stick is the front runner. Android auto would be nice I got pretty tired of trying to update my nc1 to modern tech while keeping a mostly stock appearance.

I just picked up an 08 Accord 6-speed V6 about 2 months ago. There’s a huge difference between that and a Civic Si, especially when it comes to handling. The Accord is obviously heavier, and it shows in the handling. That’s not to say it’s bad, but compared to the go-kart like handling of a typical SI, it is vastly different. On the flip side, that J35 is an absolute beauty. And it’s possible to get nearly 30 mpg on the freeway running regular as opposed to premium. This will come as a “no duh”, but it is substantially faster in a straight line than the Civic as well.

Yeah but having owned a Miata for a couple years I want something bigger and comfier and some straight line speed would be nice too. Especially since we now live in Chicago and not Denver where I bought the Miata, not nearly the same driving experience here.

I’m just a big guy and when I was younger and more dedicated I didn’t mind squeezing myself in there but now it bothers me, the suspension is hella harsh too for a DD, I just want more of a GT car at this point.

Completely understood, sold my slightly modded NA when I moved from the Midwest out east. The accord certainly fits the bill for what you’re saying, although apparently the auto is a second or so slower to 60, for what it’s worth.
I will say, punching it in 3rd gear at 40 or so (merging on the freeway) there aren’t many cars on the typical Chicago freeway that’ll gain ground on you in the accord.
If you haven’t driven one, I will give you one piece of knowledge. There is a one way orifice in the clutch slave cylinder that makes the clutch act weird from time to time on pedal release. It is apparently there to prevent driveline shock for drivers that don’t know how to properly modulate a clutch. I haven’t done the diy removal yet, but apparently it’s a pretty quick and easy job. But with the orifice in place, the clutch doesn’t have the direct feel of a miata unit.

I mean the new Mustangs are very nice. I find Ford in general to be the only American car brand that I like the products from. I would gladly take a FoST or a FiST as a practical daily. I’m in a similar boat of having a Miata that I would rather stop dailying and get something a little more practical. But it very much still has to be fun! Otherwise I will just end up driving the Miata all the time anyways lol.
I think I’ve got a lower budget but my top choices right now are a Mazdaspeed3, Legacy GT, Subaru WRX, and then a whole list of various stuff that I want to check out but not sure they really fit my requirements. Nothing too crazy but still exciting enough to drive around every day.
Used Focus STs can be had for like $15k though so I might save up some more and try to get one of those. Seems like a perfect fit for me!

The Acura TL sh-awd or Acura TLX sh-awd are surprisingly powerful and with some decent wheels/tires will far out handle an Accord V6 or Civic Si. the torque vectoring all wheel drive is amazing and they’re surprisingly tossable cars. It’s way more planted and luxurious than the Accord too.

I’ll have to do some research, those are good suggestions I hadn’t thought of, price may be an issue though and I was looking more for a coupe but definitely worth seeing what they go for in my area.

I don’t mind the si in coupe form but I might not feel that way in a couple years, it’s definitely a lot less mature, the accord seems like a safer bet.
