Got into trying to find all of their late night appearances, forgot how wild “Flood” must have seemed in 1990 to a standard audience.

Appropos of nothing, here’s a taste:

I was a TMBG fan back in the early days and that album really was something else when it came out. My favorite album of theirs, though, is the previous one, Lincoln. That’s a masterpiece and got some play, so Flood really felt like a progression to anyone who was paying attention to them. I used to go into New York City with a friend of mine when I was a teenager and we’d see these signs that said “They Might Be Giants Dial-a-Song Service” with their phone number. You’d call and an answering machine would play a weird song. We became obsessed with this and started documenting the songs which would change every few days, or something. My favorite was one called Exploding Invitation which they played live a few times, but never put on an record. I remember getting a frantic phone call one day when my buddy discovered that they had recorded an album.

Yea, I was a bit young for TMBG in those days, and Lincoln is rad, too. I know folks have archived the old Dial-a-Song versions of stuff that later appeared on albums, and I genuinely like some of them better.

Yeah, the Dial-a-Song versions are so simple. Usually just them and a Casio, or the accordion. And the fact that you were hearing it over an old phone made them sound so weird. There are a couple long compilations of Dial-a-Song songs on Youtube, but none of them seem to have Exploding Invitation. I may never hear that song again except in my head. I was probably 14 when we first started calling. And we were nerdy kids, so this was perfect. Like they had done it just for us. And then we would joke about what if TMBG became really famous one day. That idea seemed absurd at the time.

Hey! I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I do a TMBG podcast and this week we’re covering Exploding Invitation, among other rare songs. A recording of it did service and it may be up on youtube or etc, or I’d be happy to send you the mp3. I’d also love to hear more about TMBG early days in the 80s, if you’d ever want to email us some stories or details! Our twitter is DontLetsPod if you want to reach out!

Hey, awesome! Thanks for letting me know that song was unearthed. I just listened to it for the first time in years on Youtube. I’d love to get an MP3. I can be Gmailed at fuldamobil @ . I will check out your podcast. I saw them dozens of times back in the old days, so I may have some stories you’ve never heard. I’ll have to shake out the cobwebs and see if anything comes to mind.
