Such a shame another car factory closing down.

With car manufacturing almost ceasing entirely, will Australia reduce the tariff slightly on car imports?

The tariff is there partially to protect the home automotive industry but as almost all cars will be getting imported now, it’s partially an unnecessary tax on customers. Which isn’t fair on you guys and gals.

But keeping the tariff could influence new plants to open in the future, if global economic conditions make Aussie labor favorable again?

It could but isn’t Toyota (Australia’s biggest car producer) also closing/closed because both GM and Ford are pulling large scale manufacturing out of the country which means parts sourced within Australia with will go up. That’s what Toyota said earlier this year.

((I can’t get a link to paste but there is a an article by Joshua Dowling, Naional Motoring Editor for News Corps Australia Network for the Daily Telegraph on the 3rd of February 2017)).

So if the biggest producer doesn’t find it sustainable to build there after two smaller producers leave, it would take a big move on several companies part to make it viable again.

In the meantime the tariff is an added tax on Australian citizens.

Yeah, unfortunately they are all leaving, with Toyota being the last to make the announcement. I think that the reason they were there to begin with was for better acceptance against the local automakers.

At some point in the future, maybe there would be reason to make the change back. I can’t imagine it being anytime soon. In the meantime, it’s money going to the government’s pockets.
