given that I

a. don’t need synthetic...my engines tolerances are low and heat buildup isn’t really a big issue.

b. change it frequently due to potential contamination issues (water/dirt) anyway

c. think 20K intervals are a fools errand.

d. Need nearly 8 quarts per change.

I think I will pass.

Its a good deal, but I still think 20k intervals are a terrible idea all around except for low stress engines doing low stress jobs.

No way could I go that long between oil changes, I would run out of oil lol. And the filters do not last that long either. I like doing a 5-10k interval with the extended performance (15k mile) stuff.

Might want to ask BMW why this is a horrible idea and why they went from 15k to 10k. Also Mobil only tested this on 3 cars..... As an engineer there is no way thats enough samples. Come back to be when there is 15 samples (generally the minimum amount of samples to be statistical) of each engine type.

Source on their data

But I did with my RX-8, and it worked out...

...oh wait.

Honestly, the source you posted makes me feel better about their claims

“ To simulate beyond-extreme annual driving conditions, a 120,000-mile proof of performance test was carried out ...Three vehicles – all featuring turbocharged, direct-injection engines, which are notoriously tough on oil – were tested:

2015 Chevrolet Malibu LT, 2.0L TGDI

2015 Lexus NX 200t, 2.0 L Turbo

2016 Ford Fusion SE, 1.5 L EcoBoost

The proof of performance testing included putting 120,000 miles on each vehicle, and then inspecting, rating and photographing the engines to document the oil’s performance. Each vehicle endured a severe duty test cycle on a mileage accumulation dynamometer, and operated under a combination of incline and towing conditions with oil changes every 20,000 miles. The used motor oil was put through a battery of lab tests – midway and at the end of each test cycle – to determine its durability and performance in key areas: Oil life, wear protection and sludge prevention. Despite the strenuous test requirements... oil demonstrated outstanding performance in all key areas.”

As an engineer you should know any argument that begins with “as an engineer” is bullshit and I say that as an engineer. As an engineer I know how sue happy American consumers are and how Exxon is an engineer, technical, driven company, and has probably Covered Their Asses to an extreme degree to be able to advertise 20k intervals.

I do 10k changes now with high grade synthetics. I don’t tow. My driving is 90% highway. I don’t see why I couldn’t push it to 20k with this stuff.

I change my every 5-6k and I have little concern about contamination. 20k is just way too long.

10k is too long if you ask me. our old TDI had 10k intervals and at the end the oil looked and smelled REALLY bad.

I would agree. I have to wonder if the long intervals are a contributor to the reliability complaints you see with European manufacturers. Especially considering how rough FI engines are on oil.

But if they have the data to CYA, why not be upfront with it? They should have known car enthusiast would scrutinize it.

My biggest problem it that they think you should accept that because those 3 cars showed positive results, that 95% (thats being generous) of the time there wont be an issue. Bullshit, those are 3 of roughly the same type of engines, I4 turbo with DI. What about a DI turbo I6s in BMWs? DI V8s in almost half of GMs line up? What bout carborated motors? Older Fuel injected motors? Are those covered? And how much were those cars really towing? What about a F150s Ecoboost Turbo v6 towing 8000lbs up a 5% grade? You cant just assume that these will be ok because then you wouldnt be Covering Your ASS.

I change my TDI out every 5k because I like my car and I want to keep it.

I also get parts and things at cost, and I do the work myself =]
