Kinja'd!!!

Coke came out with a new & somehow also improved* taste for their recent attempt to make a delicious sugar free beverage. This new model claims to go down more smooth while keeping the girth adding at bay.

Verdict? Still tastes like crap.

*No. Its new OR its improved.

I’m of the mindset that anything they use to make it sugar free is actually worse for you.

Thats my slant on the whole thing....that and if I’m going to drink something other than water I should probably enjoy the taste otherwise whats the point?

Same product as Coke Zero with a different natural flavor profile.

I don’t see why people drink soda all the time. Drink water or tea! There is a little store on the way to pt. Reyes and it has cool all natural sodas, some from the UK, have real kola nut etc.. or a creamy root beer. I only drink soda for that quality and I know I’m going to burn a crap load of calories surfing or hiking out in west marin. Diet has to be bad for you. I started putting agave in my coffee and it’s ok.

Agreed. I recently tried a new amino acid brand, selected unflavored and I try it and it tastes like pure sugar. Looked at the ingredients, fucking sucralose. Tried it for a week but it was not making my stomach happy.

There’s actually some truth in this without stepping into the cesspool of Mommyfoodhaterswhoeatgrainsandvegansaladswhilebloggingfromtheirlocalstarbucks.org A lot of fake-sugar products have to make up the flavor elsewhere and have to add either sodium, or other less ideal chemicals to make up for it.

In reality you’re better off having a naturally sugar-free alternative (in this case iced tea, coffee or water) or simply less of the regular sugar variety.

Also, the appearance of low-sugar items that aren’t calorie free, people tend to eat more as they are suddenly care-free about what else is in there.

NPR had a bit a few years back where they observed how much people were snacking and people eating the “low-cal” option went back for seconds and thirds of that item more often, thus negating the low-cal side of it.

Yep, that’s why I still drink regular soda. If I’m going to have a soda, I’m going to have the best tasting version, otherwise, what the hell is the point?

Want to mitigate the negative health consequences of drinking such a thing? Don’t drink as much or as often.

Aspartame is one of, if not THE, ,most studied and researched food additives in the world. It is safe. Very safe. And the newer sweeteners are sugar alcohols that we discovered in plants. Many fruits and vegetables that you eat produce a tiny amount of it. In fact, due to mopst people’s negative perception of aspartame, they are switching over to these fruit and vegetable derived sugar alcohols like Xylitol.

So just a heads up that if you think the stuff is bad in pop, you eat it already every time you eat certain fruits and vegetables.

Pop/Soda is inherently bad so for me it’s either you do it in moderation with all its sugary goodness or you don’t do it at all.

I understand that these chemicals and new plant extracts are well studied but at the same time various sugar substitutes I’ve ever tried have always temporarily wreaked havoc on my digestive system.

The fruits and vegetables that contain these derived sugars also contain actual nutrients and fiber whereas a can of Coke Zero or Diet Pepsi contain nothing of value.

It’s the whole milk vs. 2 percent for me. Whole milk, makes me feel fuller. Whether I am putting it in cereal, oatmeal or cooking mac and cheese. 2% often makes me feel like I want 2nds or more.

THere’s a lot of truth to the need for fiber and other “material” for lack of a better word, to be present. And sugar does count as some “material”. I usually don’t drink pop unless it’s with a meal or something but yeah, gassy beverages make me feel like yuck unless there’s food to go with it.

Yeah it’s why fruit juices are not really that good for you. It’s all the sugars of the juice and none of the fiber/pectin that help keep you feeling full or satisfied.

I got the water flavor adder stuff. It’s basically the artificial flavors and sweeteners but for some reason that doesn’t upset my stomach one bit. But it fills the need for sweet tastes and it gets me to drink a lot more water.

After 18 months of bulking up, where I gained 18 lbs of mostly (but not entirely) muscle, I decided to switch gears and cut down some of the fat that came along for the ride. I made some tweaks to my eating plan including ditching all sweetened drinks, which for me consisted of the occasional juice and more frequent artificial-sweetener soda. I still allow myself a small amount of stevia in my coffee. I’ve already dropped 8 lbs in about a month, and I’m still lifting the same amount as before. Ditching the juice and artificial sweeteners isn’t the only change but I definitely think it’s helped.

Im ditching sugar drinks here as soon as my supply is all used up and hitting the gym more than once a quarter in an attempt to drop some weight. With the amount I drink I am thinking those 2 things alone will go a long way.

One thing that I see in some of the journals is the effect of artificial sweeteners on insulin levels. Looks like there *may* be something to the whole “trick your body into thinking it’s sugar and spiking your insulin” hypothesis.

I had heard some evidence that initially, your body will release some insulin, but you built a tolerance/acceptance pretty quickly and you adjust. Similar to the tendency for people to get gassy from consuming sugar alcohols, at first. Part of the insulin spike might be that your body is used to receiving the sugar alcohols along with fibers, sugars, and carbohydrates when you eat fruit and veggies and whatnot. But there is still more work to be done.

The studies on aspartame showed that it does not trigger any release of insulin in your body.

I dropped sugared sodas as part of my weight loss program in college and switched to diet. Lost all the weight I wanted and found I couldn’t go back if I wanted to. Regular sugared sodas were too sweet for me. Once in a while, I’ll have a regular something, but not often.

I’ve been drinking Coke Zero for years. I take one of those little cans (8oz?) to work every day for lunch.

I have been taking the new Coke Zero to work for a little over a week now, and I can’t tell the difference.

But is it still aspartame?

The caffeine free Zero made a decent mixer. I just assumed the alcohol would kill the aspartame. That’s how that stuff works right?

I agree. If you’re going to drink a soda, drink one that has real sugar and savor it. Don’t guzzle by the gallon like a glutton.

I love Bundaberg Ginger Beer. That stuff rocks my world.

I’ve mostly cut out sodas, except as mixers (Jack and coke, rum and coke, ginger ale and white rum, or Kahlua and root beer); but the only diet or dietish sodas I’ve ever liked are Coke Life and TaB. The latter mainly because it doesn’t try to imitate a non-diet soda, it just has its own flavor.
