Your State's Signature Dick Move?

What’s the one thing you see drivers constantly pulling in your state? For Texas this is easy: Pulling out of a side road in front of 50-60mph traffic without looking. I swear I see this every single time I drive in this state, and I’ve almost crashed twice because of drivers pulling out right in front of me on highways. Texans have no concept of time and space apparently.

The runner up would be driving with the high beams on constantly. A ny time I drive at night I’ll pass several drivers with their high beams on.

What’s the signature dick move of the idiots in your state?

Well I started in Hawaii. I would say there everyone is a lookyloo and has to slow down to see if they know the person involved in something. A simple breakdown or cop incident grinds the highway to a crawl. CA, where do we begin? Prius or Tesla driving slow in the left lane? I think all these new lights are too bright, most on low seem like high to me.

Everything.

I live in Florida.

Every move is a dick move.

If you want to be specific, it’s all of the tourists driving 10 under in the left lane on I95 and cutting across three lanes without a turn signal to get to their Holiday Inn after a long day of shopping at the Sawgrass Mall or Dolphin mall in their rental Versa or Town & Country.

People certainly do that way too often in NJ. I get especially mad when it happens and I am not even speeding. Going 50 in a 50 and a jackalope pulls in front of me and proceeds to not bother accelerating and reaches a maximum speed of 45 after 10-20 seconds. These are the only people that I will dangerously tailgate and pass aggressively when legal to do so.

Overall NJ aint too bad though for driving. I enjoy having lots of aggressive drivers that behave erratically. At least people seem to know what they are doing and have places to be. I cant stand driving in PA or upstate NY with all the damn slow people that seem to be in another world while driving.

Are they not looking? My take has been that they see you, but are just expecting you brake for them. In any event, it was definitely a problem in Austin, but seems less common here in Houston, though it might just be that there are fewer high-speed service roads.

In my mind the Houston signature move is cutting across the gore (and often multiple lanes of traffic) to reach your exit. No one plans what lane they need to be in ahead of time.

In Michigan it’s the classic “This lane is ending and everyone merged but since no one is in it I can use it to pass everyone and NOW YOU HAVE TO LET ME IN!!! LET ME IN WHY ARE YOU NOT LETTING ME IN I HAVE TO BE LET IN FUCK YOU IM GOING IN AND IF WE CRASH ITS YOUR FAULT FOR NOT LETTING ME IN!!!!”

The Jersey slide.

There’s a toll plaza just south of the Driscoll Bridge where people will blindly cut across six lanes of traffic just to get on the express lanes of the Parkway. Even if it’s 8:30 at night with no slowdowns whatsoever. It’s the one thing that really makes me see red when driving.

Oh yes, that’s a big one. It’s too bad we don’t have mandatory zipper merges, which would partially legitimize that sort of thing.

What I really hate, though, is the overall lack of lane discipline. I see drivers choosing the left lane as their default lane regardless of speed, and staying there for miles and miles without turning or there even being any cars in the right lane to pass. And THEN they get to a “left lane ends merge right” sign, and they stay in the left lane, riding the left edge of the road as if the right lane was the one that was ending.

or in Austin, making a left turn from the right turn lane, or making a right turn around traffic stopped at a red light... (however while I’ve seen this happen way too often, it doesn’t compare in frequency with just pulling right out into traffic without looking).

I say for Houston and Dallas at least, the signature thing would be lighting violations in general

high beams because a $8 bulb is out

lifted trucks with low beans not adjusted

cheap 6000K headlights and fog lights

tinted head and tail lights

tail/brake light bulbs burned out

no turn signals ever

stuck brake light switches

roof mounted LED light bars on

No lights at all during the rain

No light on at night

Only DRL’s at night

hard to see cheap aftermarket light housing

sun burned headlight housings

way too bright LED light bars on license plates

LED lighting all over motorcycles

LED lighting on vehicle wheels and along the under-body

That’s generally what happens with long merge zones. Pennsylvania avoids this by making merge zones short, under 1/8 mile, which forces drivers to coordinate.

Its even worse on back roads. You are generally lucky if people will even do the speedlimit. Meanwhile I’m in a Miata so backroads in PA are super fun, until you get stuck behind the guy going 40 in a 50 and still braking for every turn. I speed more on backroads than the highway for sure.

That’s really the truth. One of these days I’m going to hook up a dashcam and document all the shitheads I see... 9/10 of them have Empire State plates. 50 in a 65? NY plates. 60 in the left hand lane? NY plates. Cutting across 3 lanes to take an exit? Backing up on the highway? I’ve even been let go with a warning for 70 in a 50 while passing on a 2 lane road. Its nice at least that speeding is accepted. But yeah the out of staters dont seem to get this ever.

WA is extreme passive-aggressive driving, with left lane camping being a signature move that reaches the highest level of skill here. We also have a lot of TX turns from side streets to highways without realizing cars are coming.

ME is the stop-and-turn, where the cars come to a complete stop unexpectedly without any indication it is coming, then they either continue or turn right/left.

CA is highly aggressive driving pushing other cars to move over or get out of their way. It is almost an art form. WA drivers are completely immune to them, though.

They will seriously go to massive lengths to do this. Like there will be a gap 5 cars long and if someone turns on a blinker, he car with the space will floor it to keep them from changing lanes. It makes people stop using blinkers, but hen if they notice you checking the blind spot they’ll also speed up.

I almost forgot about this dick move. My wife won’t even drive in UT, she expects me to drive because the drivers freak her out.

In Missouri, there are many instances of people aspiring to drive as aggressively as they do in places like SoCal, but without any of the skill or testicular fortitude to actually carry it out.

In terms of dick moves, this most frequently manifests itself in attempting to use any and every lane to pass, but without the foresight to pick the most appropriate lane or willingness to change lanes into a gap any more narrow than 3-4 car lengths. The end result is a cycle of blitzing up to tailgate -> hitting the brakes and sitting in that position for ~15 seconds or more while waiting to either “bully” the car out of the way or a wide enough gap in an adjacent lane to open up -> changing lanes to whichever one is immediately open (nevermind that there’s an even slower car about 2 car lengths ahead) -> repeat.

It won’t help much, but I’ll keep it up. I keep it up for where I live, too, but it doesn’t seem to help because we have high-paying jobs in abundance. Most people that live there (like the person from last night, who was also a mormon) only live there because they have family there. It’s also possibly the most fecund state in the country, which is why it’s becoming so excessively populated, not the people moving from other states that they accused even when I was a kid after moving there (and we moved because we had family there that we wanted to be closer to). Sure, we moved from CA, but we were small potatoes (and most of us children have left), but I encountered three families within a month of moving there with more than 20 children. That’s why UT is so overpopulated/congested.

In response to the question about whether they like living there, the person responded with a question: “Does anybody actually like living here?”

The question touched on the deep truth above - most people are there for some reason that has nothing to do with liking the place.
