Kinja'd!!!

Stefbait after the jump!

This event was over a month ago, so this photodump is long overdue. Not much to tell about the event itself, as it was mostly (inexperienced) rich guys driving their Porsches around Zandvoort.

Kinja'd!!!

Due to this, and the fact that we couldn’t roam the track freely, I’ve taken quite a lot of pictures that are similar to each other. That wasn’t really a problem though, as it gave me time to get used to the different lenses I was using, all of which were made available by Canon, as part of their Test Drives. This gave me the opportunity to try out some crazy expensive lenses(EF 200-400/4.0L, EF 800/5.6L), and also a few more attainable ones(EF 70-200/2.8L and EF 70-200/4.0L).

Anyhow, enjoy the pictures below. To prevent Kinja from braking down you can find the rest in a Flickr album.

Wow... Great shots. I need a GT4.

Thanks! I’m sure the quality of the shots was definitely helped by the expensive lenses, haha.

The best photographer with the worst lens can make a better photo than the worst photographer with the best lens.

Nice work! I need a bit of practice on my pans but I only get 2-3 weekends per year to try the big track. Unfortunately angles like these are unobtanium for people like me because the area is sectioned off for pros :(

Kinja'd!!!

Also need practice shooting at the opposite ends of the spectrum: extremely fast shutter speeds, since I apparently shoot everything around 1/200

Thanks! A pro photographer (who shoots almost all formula 1 races) told me that you can practise panning on about everything that moves. He advised me to further practise the panning on cyclists, as they are very handy for playing with shutter speeds (Too fast and you don’t get motion, too slow and the legs of the cyclist become a mess).

Also, I got very lucky with these angles, as amateurs like us can indeed not get to these spots normally. However as I was a guest of Canon on this event, I got press access (including a jacket with a number).

guest of Canon

Jealous! I dont think Sony does much up here.

I was actually debating shooting superbikes this weekend but that would have ended badly

The Dutch branch of Canon is pretty active in organizing workshops and such, which is pretty nice. Most of the time they pair these workshops with the opportunity to try out their lenses. Though this one was mainly an opportunity to try out the lenses, to which they invited a few interesting pro photographers to give tips.

Yeah, superbikes are probably way too fast to get a good shot of.

But empty track and infinite vantage points! Especially a place like Mosport, where 50+% of the track length is camping grounds.

What’d you try? My workhouse is a sigma 70-200 2.8 but I’m dying to try sonys native telephotos, especially something longer than 300 so I dont need a teleconverter. 16-35 and 24-70 are also on my list, and maybe a full frame body later on.

I tried a EF 200-400/4.0L, EF 800/5.6L, EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 24-105/4.0L and EF 11-24/4.0L, so not really the typical obtainable lenses... Good fun trying the crazy expensive ones though. I’m hoping to buy a 70-200 (or something a bit longer even) next year, as I really missed focal length when I was at the Nürburgring yesterday (I guess the Canon event spoiled me).

800!! I can only dream. At mosport thats probably a car fully in frame from 20+ meters away.
