All back together. No change. Still no start and backfiring through the carb. Fuck.

Probably already checked this but had something similar happen to me earlier this year. We over looked the spark plug wiring as they were accidentally reversed and it was coughing up the intake. Everything else looked good, timing, fuel pressure, and we were getting spark but didnt realize until later that is was during the wrong TDC.

With valve cover off, make sure at top dead center the #1 piston, valves and distributor are all where they should be..... You never know, maybe the flywheel damper has slipped and you are getting fake timing indication.

Did you try unplugging it and plugging it back in?

Back fires are typically due to a lean condtion. I’d go through the carb.

Have you tried swapping in a fuel injected motor?.... I mean...

The biggest problem I can see is the damn turbo, that’s going to make it hard to diagnose. If only gm wasn’t so damn lazy and put fuel injection on those.

So, timing correct for where the wires are on the distributor? When I just did the compression test on the Cougar, I pulled them all off, and put em back on in the right order. I was off one spot all around on the distributor though. Gave me the same issue, backfiring and no start. Thankfully, I had a picture for reference to get the wires back where they needed to be.

? or have you checked to make sure they aren’t corroded. I had a 30+ year old one that frayed to shit when i touched it.
