White Residue

I took off my exhaust manifold and turbo and they car covered in white powdery residue. The manifold is cracked and the white starts after the cracks. I’ve heard this can be caused by burning coolant but also running too lean. Could it happen just because of the cracks?

Also in the 2 years I’ve owned the car I have noticed it “using” coolant. Here’s a photo of the substantial cracks, the one on the left is also visible on the top side of the manifold.

I am in no way qualified to answer this, but my unprofessional opinion is that you either have extreme oxidation, possibly due to the crack in the manifold, OR you have a build up of carbon, which is being slowly burned off and turned white by exposure to extreme heat.

Again, I am completely guessing. I just like to watch myself type.

I’m thinking/hoping it’s the cracks in the manifold that are the cause.

If you got a little bit of moisture in there on a regular basis from the outside air I don’t see why it couldn’t cause a build up from corrosion. Here’s hoping.

Yeah a new manifold is a lot cheaper/easier than a head gasket.

No one said cocaine yet? Just me? Alright.

COCAINEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

No idea what it is though. Carbon deposits?

My partially educated guess is you’ve been running lean( very hot) which ended up cracking the manifold and the white is a mixture of lean burning temps and coolant.

Side note: carbon deposits are black and or soot like if I’m not mistaken.

Side, side note: Have you had frequent backfires?

Dumb question. Have you run “race” gas at all? Leaded fuel can do that too.

Outside of that I’d side with Baeromez.

Hot temps, I’d wager running a bit lean; also, extreme temps are encouraging oxidation hence the flaking. For kicks and grins you may want to hit up forced performance and check out their manifold while you rattle their brains.
