The guy’s insurance is being very cool so far. He admitted fault, reported it quickly, I’m glad he wasn’t charged. I talked to his dad while the odds and ends were being sorted out right after the fact. Apparently he works nights and has a really long commute. Everyone I tell the story to immediately assumes he was drunk or otherwise under the influence; the evidence to the contrary is slim.

*EDIT: The CBP officer who responded let me know that he did check for signs of intoxication and found nothing incriminating.

AFAIK the driver is okay. That’s really the most important thing here. I’m not out for any sort of philosophical reckoning. I just want my Jeep back. People make mistakes.

Has insurance given word on what’s happening with the Jeep?

Such provenance, lol.

I used to spare no love for this thing back when my parents first bought it. Even when I bought it from them I was thoroughly unconvinced of its merits. I was planning on using the GC as a bone-stock, long term daily for as long as I can keep it running.

120k miles, ice cold A/C (never repaired or recharged), 4x4 (!!!) and the possibility of a lifetime (idk, 15 + years?) DD with decent cargo capacity that can easily pull a trailer, made for an obvious buy.

Hell, I took it on a thousand+ mile roadtrip the second month I had it, without even a whisper of a thought of an issue. I’ll post a full review if I ever get it back, but suffice it to say, this thing was sweet.

They should be moving it to the body shop in the AM. I’m really worried it will be totaled. It’s worth close to what I initially guessed (KBB value), but the damage seems pretty serious.

I really hope it’s repairable because it was a single-owner, very well kept vehicle. I’m not putting much thought into the alternative yet.

Good that the insurance gears are turning. I’d guess they’ll total it, the main bit of frame seems bent compared to the other side and its nit exactly new.  I imagine it’s not easy but you are looking at an opportunity to get something you might desire more.

Man! I’m walking the fence! I know its kinda paranoid, but I don’t want to post any numbers until I know what’s going down for sure.

The bottom line is that I don’t think I’ll be able to buy as nice an example of what I’ve got for what I think they’d give me for it.

The Grand Cherokee is pretty far from what I would’ve seen myself driving before I had it, but this one’s particular combination of amenities and simplicity really hits a sweet spot in between my personal mechanical skills and my tolerance for “non-functional mechanical novelties” (things that are broken but you don’t really need).

I want to use this thing to haul projects! I want to drive it to places most vehicles can’t go! I want to keep it.

I felt similarly about my first car. I imagine it being in the family before you had it makes the connection quite strong too

Make DAMN sure you fight this fight with the insurance company. I’m 99.9999999999% sure they’ll total it, and when they do, they’ll offer you $11 and some belly button lint. The first offer is always a low ball. Make sure you fight with them to replace the vehicle their client wrecked with one that’s equal to it.

Sounds to me like the guy was tired. That has the same affect on the body as being drunk. You’re right though, the important thing is everyone is ok. Luckily the dude is taking responsibility for it, and has insurance.

Driving tired is a real danger. I’ve almost wrecked a couple times because of it.

The bitch of it is when you get to destination sometimes you are then wide awake and can’t sleep.

how could he miss your Jeep with so many LEDs.

When I had my first accident the other guy said “shit happens”. He was the owner of the pool hall we were going to and I had just absolutely murdered his dodge intrepid. Actually looking back at that and the wrecked Intrepid, the guy probably thought I was a servant of god for relieving him of that POS

Was he driving the wrong way on the street? Or were you parked on the road facing into the traffic flow?
