So, it looks like we might be going to Wales around Easter 2018. With a big group. Many from outside of the UK, who will be flying in. But what to drive? A pathetic Opel Vauxhall Corsa rental? Why not buy a beater instead? Who can find the best beater?

Some requirements: car needs to run and drive, be street legal and have a valid inspection. No biohazards (on the inside). Max price: 300 pounds.

In consideration of the total cost of renting a Corsa when I was there, a beater would have certainly been more fun for the money.

What about insurance? That’s usually the killer here.

We’d have to figure something out with the help of those who live in the UK. I wouldn’t drive without insurance, especially on the ‘wrong’ side of the road. It is the biggest hurdle though, you’re certainly right about that.

Would sure be more fun than a rental Corsa. I think we need a following vehicle with tools (and coolant, oil etc) though.

I always wondered that about the Top Gear stuff... sure they could get the cars for that cheap, but was the insurance ever included? I really doubt it. Especially when they got the 100 pound cars. The whole point was you could buy a car good enough to drive to Manchester and back for less than it would cost to get there on a train. I highly doubt that was possible for Hammond and May if they really counted up all expenses... JC maybe since he only spent a pound on his.

The Senator sure has a lot of trunk space... so we might need a second following vehicle as well.

If you buy the car in France or Germany I can help out getting temporary basic insurance (you can drive in the UK with it). Not sure how it works for the UK and if you buy the car there though...

a rental will be cheaper in the long run as if you buy a car here you will need to insure it but also (as of March ‘16) you will need to tax the car as it’s not transferred to the new owner

I don’t know about the UK, but in the Netherlands you only pay for the days you’ve actually got it insured. So if you insure it on day 1 and remove the insurance on day 14 you pay for 2 weeks, or 2/52 part of what you’d pay for a year. Insurance companies will obviosuly hate you if you do that too often, but once or twice shouldn’t be an issue.

In theory you could just insure your beater as cheaply as possible, and just cancel it again within 14 days. Just need to pick an insurer that doesnt have a cancellation fee.

How does that work in the UK? I’m used to paying per month, but if I were to sell the car on the 15th I’d get half of the monthly tax back. As in: you end up paying per day and not a day too many.

Around 1600 pounds for 2 weeks in a 206 GTI including everything but fuel. Car, insurance, hotel.

I have no idea if that’s good or not. Never looked into it.

from a uk perspective you buy the car and then tax it (either 6 months or 12 months) and then if you cancel you get the remaining amount back from the following months eg. if I did 6 months tax and cancelled during the 2nd month I’d only get 4 months back not 4 months + remainder of the 2nd

as for actually taxing and registering the car I’m not sure how you would go about doing that without a UK address

that’s not great considering I pay around £600 for a whole year for a vx220 but at the same time they have to make sure they’ve got money to cover themselves in the event of a claim

you might want to contact the DVLA to see what advice they can offer? here is a link to do an email form thingy but there is always the possibility of live chat https://live.email-dvla.service.gov.uk/w2c/en_gb/forms/Direct%20Debit?button=57358000000Gqkk&decision=Any+other+vehicle+tax+enquiry+not+listed&lang=en_gb

Well, that is not as reliable of a support vehicle as I had in mind, but I guess it’ll work. As long as it has enough room to carry extra radiator hoses and extra coolant for itself.

Just no to Wales in general, good luck with the roadsigns, but tax can be set up as a direct debit (monthly) and you can get temporary insurance;

https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/temporary

But it may be a struggle if your licences are non EU, but for the EU drivers it’ll be worth a check with your insurance company if you have EU cover, as that should cover you in the UK.

This would be cool if we got someone local to handle the logistics of things. And then people can pay the local person for it. Idk, I feel like it would be hard to register the vehicle legally lol.

If you can tax it without a UK address you can choose ‘monthly direct debit’ as your method for paying and then cancel it after the first month (there’s a website to SORN it).

As far as I can tell, they don’t actually ask the address to tax a new vehicle. Just registration and a code from the paperwork you get when you purchase it. What you will need is a UK address for a V5, but I’m looking into that now :) there’s a lot of stuff online about people who frequently holiday/work in the UK who want a car here but no UK address.
