Kinja'd!!!

Nathan “Nearest” Green was Jack Daniel’s first master brewer and served in that capacity after the Civil War. Jack Daniel was the second master brewer and is now finally recognized as such by the company that owns the Jack Daniel’s brand.

Here is the full story.

Well, should I ever come in possession of a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, I shall put a note over the name saying “Nathan Green’s”.

Irony is a difficult word to define, but you know it when you see it.

This is a cool story. I didn’t even know anything about the history of whiskey.

Still trying to wrap my head around “brew” and “whisky”.

Whisky is distilled.

What surprised me is that the brand didn’t own the farm where their product was first distilled.

The mash from which whiskey is made is basically the same as a beer wort (other than types of grain used, and whiskey mash has no hops), and both are fermented in the same way initially. That stage leading up to the distillation would correctly be considered brewing.

On the one hand “blah blah taking credit for someone else’s work just because they’re black”, on the other hand would JD have been such a success in a barely post-civil-war USA if the face of the distillery had been black?

It was probably (like 90%) the former... but I’m pretty sure the second thing is valid even if nowhere near the reason why. I REFUSE TO MAKE A CALL ON THIS BECAUSE WE HAVE JACK DANIELS AND WE MIGHT NOT HAVE DONE

I think you’re spot-on. The thought that Jack Daniel’s whiskey might not otherwise have occurred hadn’t occurred to me.

I think it is appropriate now to Give Mr. Green his due. And the lady who did all the research has commissioned a whiskey from another distiller after Mr. Green, called Uncle Nearest 1856 , according to the article. I’d be curious to learn whether you like it or not.

Me? I don’t drink, so I’d have to accept your opinion, and it sounds like you are experienced.

An interesting point. That the JD owners stepped up and embraced the heritage of Mr. Green is interesting to me, and I wonder if there is a parallel to be drawn between that and the dissolution of President Trump’s CEO committees whose members are steadily disassociating themselves from him. Signs of the times, perhaps, that there is something common behind identity politics that is, well, more common and less divisive.

This is a golden opportunity for Liberals. Now, let’s watch them squander that opportunity with weakly hiding behind, But Donald Trump!

Tbh, it hadn’t occurred to me either until now.

And absolutely... I’d say it’s past due that he gets credit for it. There really is no reason for it not to be common knowledge anymore, if there ever was. As far as Uncle Nearest 1856, it doesn’t seem to be available in Ontario—at least not right now. I’ll have to dig a little harder on that.

I do drink, though if I’m honest mostly Irish when it comes to whiskeys. Still, sometimes a little Jack is nice and I’m glad it’s around.

This is nothing to brag about. It’s nearly undrinkable.

and whisky is distilled

There is an earlier response from an Oppo in the know, who points out that the wort, the stuff that the alcohol comes from, is brewed just like with beer and that the wort - or whatever - is then distilled.

The wort is brewed, the whisky however is distilled. The process of evaporating and condensing the alcohol is distilling. It is a major defining process in spirits. No one says, “I brewed this whisky”.

I am happy to stand schooled on this. I learned, watching “How It’s Made,” that the whiskey is clear when it’s distilled, then it’s stored in charred wooden barrels and that turns it brown. In fact, I think the HIM episode is shot in the Jack Daniel’s distillery.

There’s a really good series on Amazon about the production of Islay scotches that I would highly recommend as well. Interesting to see how they all do things slightly differently. I recommend drinking scotch while watching as it enhances... everything haha
