Kinja'd!!!

Been bitten by the convertible bug, especially since a coworker just bought a similar SLK320 and loves it. Seems like a lot of car for the money and the trans / engine are stout. I know rust and electrical are an issue and I’m no stranger to regular maintenance on German cars. Anyone have any experience?

Edit to add: Boxster would be great, but they’re too pricy now. This isn’t a DD, I want to keep it around $5-6k if possible. Miata isn’t my thing. I’d love a MR2, but they’re hard to find around here in good condition and the engine bay intimidates me.

Why not a Boxster? Can be had with a manual and would handle a lot better.

Double the price, catastrophic engine failure

You could get an SLK with a manual up until they changed to the SLC. A local dealer had a used 2014 for sale recently. I didn’t believe it until I saw photos.

That being said: get a boxster.

I’m not opposed to a Boxster, and would prefer stick, but...as was said...double the price and catastrophic engine failure.

If you like the Merc, why would you not like a Miata? Both are pretty girly and slow stock. I like plenty of other cars more than my Miata but mostly none of them are convertibles, thats for sure. The Miata and S2K are the only cars that I wouldnt prefer a fixed roof version of. In other cases, the cars are just floppy and/or heavy.

Especially in that price range, the Miata is the only option.

DUDE! My mom bought one and even with the auto in it I have a blast driving it. I really wish it had a manual, but it is still just a joy to drive top up or down. I am 6'2" and 250lbs and fit great. i even think it is comfortable for long drives.

Get a pre purchase inspection. Make sure you check the trunk for water. But don’t listen to me, I don’t have any experience with the at all. Nope. No sirree. None at all.

Have you watched RCR’s video of the SLK 230? I know the engines are different but maybe you might be able get some information out of it.

I also suggest a NB Miata. You get choose between VVT (needs premium gas) or no VVT (runs on 87 just fine). After that you choose either a 5-speed or a 6-speed (tighter gears than the 5-speed, similar top speed). $4500 can get you a clean NB1 or a decent NB2, maybe a SE if the stars align properly. YMWV, of course.
