I’m not very proud of the state I’m living in (TX, not a native). Abbott is an asshole, but he did just sign a law making it much harder for cities to annex adjoining neighborhoods. This is very good news for where I live. Another plus is that the legislature (so far) has been unable to pass the “bathroom bill” aimed at keeping trans people out of the restroom of their choice. Small victories.

What’s the point if making laws like this. I mean it’s just because people don’t like abortion, or am I missing something. Is there any other argument than that a fetus is an alive person?

Pretty much. If they can’t make it illegal they will make them near impossible to get, and then they want to make them expensive to try and stop more that way.

It’s precisely because some people don’t like the idea of abortion, so they will do whatever they can to stop it.

The irony is lost on these assholes. I’m sure you’re familiar with the common Republican/conservative trope of wanting tiny government. Or that they’re always whining about wanting government out of their lives? Well, that obviously doesn’t apply when thinking someone else is doing something they don’t like, in which case they will go to the ends of the earth to stop it.

This is fucking despicable, and I hope Texans stand up and fight this.

This is so despicable it makes me sick.

I get some people don’t like the idea of abortion, but it’s none of your fucking business what a woman chooses to do with HER body!

How the FUCK can you actually think this is okay? I will bet everything I own, or ever will own, that is one of these pieces of shit Texas representatives had their daughter impregnated due or had a family member impregnated due to incest, they would be fighting against this.

I just can’t stand the hypocrisy.

Damn, I had a similar thought but i figured i may as well see if i was missing something obvious for the sake of argument. This is basically hindering ones rights meanwhile I’m sure alot of the same people arguing against this are fighting tooth ‘n nail for gun rights(I’ve got nothing against gun rights but it’s ironic)

Ah yes, gun rights is another one. They are more than happy to take away a woman’s right to do with her body as she pleases, but refuse to have their baby killers taken away.

Seriously, do they know what “irony” is?

Also, just to make you feel even better, this new bill is particularly horrid because not only is there already a federal provision called the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal dollars being used for an abortion, the Hyde Amendment specifically allows federal dollars (Medicaid, Medicare, etc) to be spent on an abortion in the case of incest or rape, and also to save the life of the mother.

Isn’t that lovely?

It’s crazy republicans. They want to enforce their ideas of morality on people just as much as the democrats.

From a personal perspective, I find abortion terrible, but I couldn’t in good conscience ever support restricting them. I would never wish being an unwanted child on anyone.

This reminds me of those crazy legal battles over covering contraceptives. Absolute garbage. If it wasn’t for risks of taking them improperly, I would rather they all be over the counter. If you want to take contraceptives, I absolutely respect your choice and believe you should be free to do so. I see it as being responsible.

The government should not be involved in the choices of any individual.

Seriously. Individual freedom in every respect (as long as it doesn’t adversely affect or remove the freedom of another) should be the target, not enforcing your opinion on others.

I wonder how this will shake out.

It reminds me of the bizarre push to remove the ability to use Medicare benefits at Planned Parenthood. Utterly baffling.

If Republicans are good at anything, it’s getting voters to believe utter bullshit. For example, Planned Parenthood, to them, is just a mill where they harvest babies for their experiments to take over the world. And Democrats are horrible and articulating the truth, which is that Planned Parenthood actually focuses on preventing unplanned pregnancies, and thus abortions, in the first place.

Democrats are just as good at making people believe utter bullshit, perhaps even better. They have some exceptionally ridiculous ideas that they enforce on others.

I think a lot of this bizarre belief about PP is actually coming from religious groups that the Republicans are in bed with. It baffles me how anyone could believe something so completely baseless.

What’s odd is that I don’t know any even marginally-mainstream religious group that opposes the use of contraceptives. Even my parents (kind of extreme religious fanatics) and my aunt & uncle (straight up insane religious fanatics) used contraceptives to reduce the number of children they had and spread their births out.

Could you please provide examples of Democrats successfully selling BS to the electorate? I’m not trying to be an ass, I am genuinely curious.

And if you can, I would be curious if they even approach the life threatening level of BS that Republicans have managed to sell, like the ACA is bad for people. Or that Planned Parenthood is terrible.

Oh, I know there are moderate/reasonable groups out there that tend to keep their beliefs to themselves. But in this country, the reasonable people get shouted down. Just look at the NRA. When you ask gun owners if they’re in favor of reasonable things like magazine round limits, or other things which would help to lower the cost of shootings, they are in agreement. But the NRA shoots down ANY regulation that would “limit” gun owners “rights.”
