I wanted to swap a wheel or two off the Miata when I got home today...I had about 30 minutes, figured I could get the rear axle done. Until I found locking lugnuts on the wheels, and no key readily visible.

Except it was there. It was there and it was in the single most logical spot for it: in the little cloth bag containing the lug wrench under the jack. I looked under the seats, in the glovebox, in the console, and it was exactly where it’s supposed to be.

So I swapped one of the wheels because that’s all I had time for:

I think they’re going to look killer. They’re 15s, which looks like just the perfect amount of wheel for it.

What else did I find in the Miata? A spare tire, jack tools, tire chains (wtf?), and a hoist for the hard top, which is pretty sweet.

Also a 120gb iPod Classic.

Depending on if it works, it’ll bring me $50-100, so that’s great.

About my only issue with the PO is that they only supplied one key when they sold it, and that key broke off in the ignition yesterday. My local Mazda dealer assures me they a) have the blank and b) can cut it based off the VIN. Technology is the best.

I also feel better about the Yukon today, I’ll write about why later. To paraphrase Dave Foley on an episode of Kids in the Hall, it’s too early to tell, but it might not be junk.

Get a couple extra keys. Those older Mazda keys like to twist and eventually break off in locks, or twist to the point of no longer functioning.

Very cool wheels and iPod find. I wish I could find my old iPod classic to just have music stored in my car and not on my phone.

The lock in the spare tire area makes sense if your trunk isn’t always full of crap, that is why mine is in the glove box.

Nice of the owner to include the key to the wheel locks. 15"s are the best all-around wheel size that allows you access to wider range of tires while retaining some comfort and not looking donk on a NA. 14" wheels could be better if there were more performance tires to buy other than the Dunlop Z2 Star-Spec.

I caution you about the hardtop hoist. I’ve seen both good and bad reviews on it with the bad reviews saying that some of the designs don’t properly secure the top, allowing it to drop onto the floor or the Miata. Personally, I built a hardtop cart using PVC pipes, some glue and hardware, and some caster wheels. It’s a two-person job to remove the hardtop but it only takes a single minute.

PS: Rev9 has two JDM Eunos key blanks for sale if you want to burn some money.

Lemme get that iPod.

New wheels look good. 15s are the right size wheels for NA/NB Miatas.

After owning my TSX for over a month now, I just discovered a vape pen in a storage pocket today. I think an iPod beats that.

I’m going to take the new one directly to my favorite locksmith and have him make a handful of copies.

I went glovebox with the Land Cruiser, I think they’re both fine choices. I was just glad to find it.

I saw a blog from a guy who actually hung his on the wall from where the Frankenstein bolts catch. He turned lag bolts in a lathe until they were the right size, ran them into a 2 x 4, and mounted that to the wall. I think that’s what I’m going to do...my dad lives two minutes away, he can always come and give me a hand with it.

On my Dad’s BRZ there is just the right amount of space in front of the wrench in the foam tool holder to put the key in the end of the socket. Fits perfectly so that’s where it lives.

Agreed. And this is coming from someone with a Miata that came with larger wheels (16") from the factory.

15" is the sweet spot for looks, weight, and tire availability/cost, and still fit over the biggest brakes the factory used.

16s so think are doable, a guy near me has an NA on 17s and it’s just WAY too much metal. I didn’t think the 14s looked too small until I got the 15s on there. I’d have been happy with 16s too though, depending on the style.

When I had a lowered black NA. I borrowed my roommate’s 17" MS Miata wheels for a bit. It looked hilarious.
