Kinja'd!!!

The other side is halfway there, but i’ve run out of old mounting plates to repurpose so i’ve got to make some more.

This definitely isn’t a modification for a standard non-unibody car. The box section’s down to 1" in height in places.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve also gone to a little over max droop and it looks like it’ll be tricky to weld a plate over the underside and still keep decent ground clearance. I might wait for the dry-fit and check it with actual max droop before boxing in the underside.

As they’d say in Oz, “Bonzer”.

Looks nice, the moment of truth for seeing the actual geometry is coming closer!

Great to see you’ve taken the working pace from worlds fastest cafe racer to the Spit6. I really hope you manage to finish it before the europpomeet :)

Hopefully! I definitely want it on the road for then :)

Next steps will be finish welding the roll hoop into the roof, a bit of floor repair i missed, get it back on the ground and do a dry fit of all the major components :)

Why are almost all your welds blobby?

I seem to recall his welder’s some sort of old Italian thing. Possibly a bit uneven with feed rate. He’s also I think running the wire just slightly fast on average, and I don’t know how steady the current’s been on his old Spit frame and its thin metal.

So the end of the major welding work is in sight? Awesome!

It is from the firewall back at least. I’ve got to sort out front suspension tower braces, radiator mounts and bonnet mounts but that shouldn’t be too great of an effort :) definitely feels like a major milestone coming up :)

Yeah Ramblin’s got it. Wire feed’s a little fast. It’s set that way to help when I’m welding upside-down which is a right pain and I just couldn’t be bothered to faff about with the speed every time I changed where I welded. Could probably have compensated by moving a little faster. Sod’s law the bits I’d got that nailed on are much less visible in the pic :S

You’re nearly finished now. Could get it done all this decade, I reckon :)

Also, did you see the new Hydragas refill valves are out?

I know! I’m getting ambitious now ;)

I’ve actually welded up the other side too now, just haven’t snapped a pic. Not it’s a little rust on the a-pillar, tying in the roll hoop to the roof and replacing the prop tunnel and the welding from the firewall back is done!

Sweet that would be excellent. I need to read up on how the trophy spheres are different because if it’s just higher gas pressure this could replicate those two, or stiffen the rear after fitting a V6 or similar ;)

Trophy spheres have a different displacer cone too, IIRC. You’d need to buy a set of the right spheres, and they’re a bit pricey these days.

The V6 was something MG/Rover explored back in the day, it fits quite easily, but it’s a bit too heavy to put that far back in the car. Plus, there’s unlimited power available out of the K-Series. Especially with a Mad Max style supercharger sticking out of the engine lid.
