So my new Prelude is back from service after $800 of little repairs like gaskets and seals and caps. The previous owner neglected a lot of maintenance but after this spruce up it no longer seems to leak oil and coolant.
First thing I want to do is replace my tired and dirty stock Type SH leather shift knob with an aftermarket metal one. I would like leather, but they are double the price.
I’m looking at the options and so far Blox, Password JDM, and Skunk2 come up. Anyone have experience with these or can vouch for any? It’d be my first real aftermarket shift knob and I want to get it right. It needs to be a heavy weight, a bit bulkier and taller than stock would be nice. The Prelude’s shift location is lower and further away than the Miata’s. It kind of feels like a reach, so the little ball ones are out for me.

I just bought a Skunk2 Billet knob and it’s going to go down as the best $65 I ever spent for my car. There’s a pic of it on my previous post

Good call. I was heavily leaning towards that Skunk2 also. It is fat enough to make me not reach as much, and it has a good height to it. Plus the gun metal with red lettering matches the car best.

It has a good weight to it as well, granted I came from some cheapy POS knob.

This one would save me $20 though...and it is heavier and taller but not as beefy. Ughhh hard decision. I just want my Lude feeling right.

I wouldnt call the Skunk2 one beefy really, but it does fit nicely in my hand.

The Blox one has a nice weight to it. If you’re unsure about how heavy a shift knob you want, try and find one that has removable weights.

Careful with the metal knobs since they will never be the right temperature. You should look into delrin if you live in a climate hat has heat and/or cold.

I also have a Prelude and Miata combo. I’ve tried lots of different knobs for the Prelude but the best is ironically the SH leather wrapped one :|
By the way, how much oil are you burning?

Aw don’t tell me that after I just ordered the Skunk2.
I cant tell right now because I went through 2 quarts in 250 miles on my first tank. I took it in and fixed up the oil leaks, so after this tank, I’ll check how much is burning.

Be vigilante my friend, H motors burns oil through piston ring so unless it’s been re-sleeved (which is costly with the FRM sidewall) it will burn. (I burn about 2 qrt every 250 miles as well)
Skunk2 style knob felt good for a few weeks, then it got annoying because of how small it felt relative to the other options.

It can’t be that much smaller than the stock one. It looks like the same size but I shall see and return if I have to. But 2 qts every tank is unacceptable for me. If it continues to do that after I confirm it isn’t leaking out, then I’ll have to let it go. I mean that is ridiculous. Burning oil is one thing, being worse than a rotary or 2 stroke is another. You should get yours checked out too.

I like the metal knobs but have heard you can be easily burned on them. I think a carbon fiber one would be cool

Mine is a lost cause :/ quickly approaching 200k and a rust bucket. Nowadays I just use it for beater duties (fun fact, you can fit at least 2 Accord front fenders in a Prelude). Good news is while it burns oil, the engine itself refuses to die as I drove around 20 miles with the crank pulley key snapped in half.
Topping off oil every gas up is basic habit for me now.

Ya a 98. I bought it for a grand 3 years ago, not sure if I can find someone willing to do the same. Honestly though, as long as rust is kept in check and you are on top of the oil, Prelude will last you forever.
If the engine does go... H23 swappppppp (well documented and not that expensive).

I’m not sure I can pass smog with an engine swap. It’d have to be bar’d so I need to take it to a mech that will charge me probably 3k for the swap...if I can even find someone who will do it.

H23 (Accord engine) is ODB2 motor, I guess it depends on what state you are in but up here they just plug in the reader. H23 swap is pretty well documented and they are basically sister engines for a different market/model. I’ve considered this when my pulley key went out, 500 bucks for the motor, 2 grand for the labor. It was still cheaper than buying and registering another car.
