Kinja'd!!!

It’s been sitting there for three days now, seemingly unwanted. Stolen property? Hmm - time for a joyride?

Unfortunately, if it’s not running, it’s broken down -

They’re gonna return to it and find it up on cinder blocks.

That would be funny to see someone try it - each wheel alone weighs over 1,000 lb. That’s without bearings, axles, motors...

Handles like its (408,000lbs dry) on rails.

I’m just thinking about the scrap value of the copper alone in the motors and the generator.

Years ago, whilst working at the airport, some of the mechanics made a sizable chunk of change dismantling and scrapping a large pushback tractor. This was a biggy, used to push out fully-loaded 900,000 lb 747s. In order to do so, or more accurately, in order to stop, they rely on huge amounts of ballast, and the scrap value of that stuff alone was worth a small fortune.

Amazing sprung/unsprung weight ratio too.

80 tons at $55/ton for iron, about $5k or so.

There’s $4k in just the wheel/axle/gear assemblies - those are good dense steel, $280/ton—

I was going by the “car body” scrap rate that was the last I knew. The more you can clean and sort, the more you can make. The ballast being solid chunks you could likely get more for since once graded it becomes a literal truck load of known material with minimal in between processing.

Yup - exactly right. I actually spent 8 years working as an engineer for a railroad wheel manufacturer, so I know those pretty well. We were buying (scrap) and selling (good) and the denser steel (plate, wheels, rail etc.) brings a real high dollar - automobile shreds, not so much (low density and remelters hate the rust prevention additives).

Apparently, that one was built in 2000, which isn’t terribly old for a locomotive.

I assumed that to be the case. They’ve been doing some work in the area over the last few weeks, with lots of work trucks and various pieces of equipment left in that general area.

Already have a Union Pacific engine, I don’t think this one would fit in the living room at Christmas time anyway.
