Kinja'd!!!

I am driving the T Bird today. I have an appointment at DMV to get the title and registration sorted out. It was technically a lien sale, as it has been out of the system for 20 years and its papers have been lost to the sands of time. This may be easy or difficult; we shall see.

Good luck, hopefully you get a helpful person at dmv. The last time I had to do something title related I used up all my good karma and was in and out in no time. I have no illusions that a dmv visit like that will ever happen again.

At least here the small town dmv that is farther away is so much better than the new mega service center that everyone seems to go to.

I’m going to relate a story here only because it happened at the DMV...but I guess that means it’s similar.

A few months ago I was selling a car that I’d previously had a loan on. When I paid the loan off, the bank didn’t send the title, but instead just told me I could get a reprint at the DMV. Well, I never thought about it again until the time came to get rid of it.

We were going to put it up for sale on the weekend, so I had to go get the title on a Friday. I didn’t get out of work until 4PM, and the DMV closed at 4:30. This was going to be dicey.

I rolled into the DMV at 4:25 and was third in the line. I pulled out my phone to start complaining about how long it would take in a text...and I heard “NEXT” and realized they were talking to me. Huh.

Walked up to the window, unsure of what I had to ask for. I just had my registration and license in hand and some other piece of paperwork that was valid. I ended up handing everything to the clerk and she figured out what I needed, and told me to go sit down and she’d have it in a moment. I turned to sit down, and literally a minute later she called me up again.

I signed the page, gave another clerk the $14 for the reprint, then had to wait 10 seconds for someone to unlock the door they’d locked at closing.

The whole experience totalled maybe 7 minutes and I had my title reprint. I was gobsmacked. People around here still complain about the DMV speed, but apparently their efficiency is top-notch at closing time on a Friday.

FWIW, I’m in Summit County, OH (Akron). Dealers from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) apparently come down to Summit for their transfers because its so much faster, even with the travel time. This DMV could be an anomaly.

You’re doing good work here, best of luck. I brought back an old Volvo that had been donated, salvaged, and had a lost title, and it took about an hour. Hope you beat that.
