Kinja'd!!!

Particularly a V6 convertible in this color (it’s her favorite). She commutes a lot of miles to work and a fuel efficient Mustang like this is both cheaper and more fun that a CUV or Jeep Wrangler (might not be as fun as a Wrangler).

The 4.0L V6 is/was garbage. Open up the pocketbook and at least get a new enough one to have the 3.7L V6, which I think started on the 2011 models.

Don’t they get 19/28mpg? I’d think there are better fun options for commuting, no?

210hp and 27mpg highway is more than sufficient for her needs. Why is it garbage? She isn’t looking for a preformance car like most of us

At 7k with good trunk space for her installs at work?

It’s a vanilla convertible nothing more nothing less.

My mother-in-law has the same car, but in maroon. She wanted an inexpensive Mustang for tooling arounf town. It makes her smile every time she gets to drive it.

The only problem has been that the paint is flaking off the hood.

I mean, if all you need is it to power the vehicle from point A to point B, then it’ll be 100% fine. It’s generally reliable, but compared to the 3.7, it’s thrashy, slow to rev, unrefined and significantly down on power. Additionally, 2010+ cars also came with a much improved interior and the 3.7 (2011+) can get over 30mpg on the highway.

Nothing wrong with that car for the price they sell at today. Inexpensive to fix, fairly decent gas mileage. 4.0 v6 is fine for your average non-performance minded drivers. That said, it does do 0-60 in about 7ish seconds, so better than most cars you can buy for the same money.

Def not fuel efficient.

It’s not that I don’t like the 3.7 better it mainly comes down to cost and low mileage.

For her it would be an improvement over her current fad 2.5 4 cylinder cvt. And the convertible and “cute” looks would make her smile.

Exactly. And at the end of the day it is still a Mustang convertible so it has some character (even if we enthusiasts like to hate on v6 auto mustangs).

26 to 27 on the highway is better than any CUV she could afford in the price range. And she Does. Not. Want. A. Sedan. Why? I don’t know. But she hates them.

I had one.

Kinja'd!!!

This pic is from an SN95 but where the cylinder mounts to the car there is a bolt that holds the body to the car with a little bracket. That bolt is held in with about 3 threads and no loctite, so if your top ever stops working properly that’s the fix and it’s time to go fishing with a magnet for the bracket and bolt. Fortunately taking the interior apart to get to that piece is STUPID easy. Seriously. The S197 has one of the easiest to work on interiors I’ve ever dealt with.

The 4.0 V6 is a good torquey motor that makes good noises. But spend $130 when you buy one and just replace the thermostat housing immediately. It takes five minutes and will keep it from exploding on the highway like mine did.

The 4.0 V6 has something like 5 timing chains, two on the back of the head. Be prepared for an engine-out service if the guides ever need replacement. It ain’t cheap. This engineering fuckery is from the originally pushrod 4.0 being turned into an SOHC engine and the beancounters insisting both heads be the same casting. It’s a disaster.

The exhausts have a tendency to resonate at something like 900 and 1700 rpm enough to rattle the doors. Aftermarket exhaust usually solves that, but it’s not even a consistent issue with all cars so... good luck?

Paint doesn’t stick to the aluminum hoods. Have fun.

The door handles will probably need replacement at some point. This requires very tiny, dexterous fingers. It took me about 3 hours and $40 to buy and paint replacement handles. A giveaway the handles have failed is if the window doesn’t automatically roll down a half inch when you pull on it, or if you have to tug harder than usual to open a door. Dealership quoted me $400 for this job.

FWIW I utterly love this bodystyle. Super clean, I love the fender flares, the design unmarred with a bunch of juvinile excessive pinches and body lines. The engine choices are just depressing. A maintenence-nightmare 4.0 V6 or a boat anchor 4.6 V8. Blech.

My dad bought one of these during retirement. My brothers and I made fun of it relentlessly (he was a lifelong car guy- like bracket racing, custom-building, known-to-the-police car guy). He loved it. He liked the retro looks, and he said “120 is fast enough for me”. The older I get, the smarter he was.

In the grand scheme of things the engine isn’t that bad. My mom had one in her old Explorer. People like to hate on the vehicle because it is a V6 auto vert but for her that’s fine. The thermostat issue is a good tip for preventive maintenance. Thanks.

Did you enjoy driving it?

It has character, looks, and millions of miles of head room. Overall a pretty good little package if you ask me.

No, the engine isn’t bad at all. It’s just that, in the unlikely event that a chain stretches or a tensioner fails it’s a huuuuge kerfluffle, even compared to other SOHC engines.

I did enjoy driving it, though. Mine was an ex-rental base model automatic and it was great transportation. Even with cheap junk tires it was enough power to be fun but not enough to get into trouble with. With the addition of a Pioneer head unit and a 12" sealed subwoofer it was also one of the best sound systems I’ve ever had (delegate any <100hz frequencies to the subwoofers and let the 4 factory speakers do what they do best, mids and highs).
