A shame the little guy had to go, but if you can’t justify the costs, it’s reasonable. Have you ever thought of picking up something like a cheap scooter to get around for the once and awhile you need it? Insurance would be cheap, it would be cheap to run too! I’ve often thought about one for popping here and there! :)

Scooter ain’t a bad idea.... I’ll look into it. I’d love to get a small motorcycle, but the girl’s firmly against that idea, even though I already have my M endorsement.

Should be fairly cheap to run and buy if you go that route, and kinda fun I would imagine...50ccs would probably be cheap as dirt, but you could at least get up to 55mph or so on a 125cc or 150cc, depending on the size of it.

Man, on Craigslist they’re more expensive upfront than the car! I don’t know a ton about scooter, but what are good brands and models besides Vespa?

I don’t have a scooter of my own, so I’m not an expert, but I really want to get one someday so I’ve done a lot of research! :)

Stay away from Chinese brands / scooters, but Taiwanese scooter companies are actually fine as a lot of them had ties to Honda and a few other Japanese companies back in the day so their quality is actually about on par. (Sym, Kymco, and PGO are the most common Taiwanese companies and would be fine!)

The Genuine Scooter company are good too - US company, but they mostly sell rebranded PGO products, so they are good quality. They also sell one model - the Stella - which is Indian-built, but very good quality as it is pretty the old Vespa PX - the Indian parent company that makes the Stella for Genuine actually had a partnership with Piaggio back in the 80's, so they are so close that most parts are interchangeable - the Stella is 2-stroke though and has an actual manual transmission rather than a CVT. Stellas also tend to be pricey due to the ‘classic Vespa experience’ and the fact that they are basically an actual classic Vespa underneath.

Vespa would also be pretty good, but they tend to be very pricey due to brand image - look up Piaggio tho, as that is Vespa’s parent company and they made scooters under their own brand name that tended to be cheaper as not as much brand cache as Vespa. Piaggio scooters were made more like most nowadays, so cheaper that way (i.e. not a full-metal body like Vespas) - still good quality though. The Piaggio Fly 150cc would be your best bet (most 150cc scooters can get up to around 80-90kph, which would be fine for city use, but don’t expect them to get there quickly :P ). There were also 50cc Fly models and another model of 50cc scooter from Piaggio called the Typhoon as well I think...? If you were going 50cc either of those would be fine. The Piaggio scooters also used the same engines as the Vespas, which is nice.

The Japanese scooters are fine as well, though a lot of them were only sold with 50cc engines - the Honda Metropolitan only was sold with a 50cc engine here AFAIK, as was the highly-regarded Ruckus. Yamaha’s Vino is supposedly a decent scooter, and it came in 50cc and 125cc variants, so no 150cc - the 125c would be decently fast enough for city use though. Older Hondas and Yamahas (90s and 80s - Honda Elites and Aeros, for example) would also probably be fine as they had 50cc, 80cc and a few larger-engined ones then as well, though keep in mind that the farther back you go with the Japanese bikes, some of them start to become 2-stroke models. However, if you did get an older 2-stroke, most of them had a separate oil and fuel tank, so you wouldn’t need to pre-mix - just poor in your gas, and check the oil every so often.

Kymco has one of my favorite modern scooters - the Super 8 150cc, but I don’t like the most modern redesign of it...(the 150X) as I’m not a fan of the fairing / headlight redesign. It’s still a good scooter though! Their Agility model comes in a 50cc and 125cc engine, so it would be a decent choice, but the Agility is fairly small, so not much storage space.

Sym has some nice 50cc and larger scooters - don’t know AS much about them, but they are good quality so one of their scoots would be a good choice. If you’re so inclined, they also have a very cool scooter/bike that is essentially a modern direct clone of the old Honda SuperCubs (the most sold vehicle on the planet) called the Sym Symba. I think they are 100cc if memory serves? The Symba has a manual transmission as well. Sym are very good quality as they started out as a partnership with Honda from 1961 all the way until 2002, so their bikes are very well-built.

That’s all that comes to mind off the top of my head :P

No worries friend, good luck! :) Not trying to MAKE you get one or anything, but there are times it’s nice to have your own way around on a moments notice and a little scoot in a big city would be cheap to run and insure and for practicality, a lot of scooters come with grocery bag hooks, plus and you get get racks and carrier cases for them, so they are practical enough for quick grocery trips and the like!

Agreed there- what IS kind of nice about where we live, is that Car2Go operates there. Which means that at a moment’s notice, we pretty much always can snag a SMART car and go for .41 a minute. It’s mainly figuring out how to do longer trips, but I also don’t hate bus rides. We’ll seeeee.
