Kinja'd!!!

This is the other half of my Land Cruiser replacement, a 2000 GMC Yukon Denali that I kinda hate but will ultimately like. The good news is that it runs and drives great. The bad news is almost everything else.

The windshield is broken, it’s got a check engine light on, ABS light is on, 4x4 doesn’t work, AC cycles but doesn’t blow very cold/hard, the headlights are gross, steering wheel is gross, tires are meh.

To that end, I’ve scheduled it for a windshield, I’m researching the CEL and ABS lights, I charged the AC and it just needs more refrigerant, I’m ordering headlights and a steering wheel. The tires are fine for now.

On the plus side, it’s got barn doors!

I believe that to be the second best way for the back of an SUV to open. First is a split folding tailgate, then barndoors, third is a regular full tailgate, fourth is being repeatedly kicked in the dick, and fifth is a full side swinging rear door.

Anyway, this is the real project here, not the Miata.

I 100% agree with the rear gate opening options.

That windshield visor is both horrible and probably does not help fuel economy.

This should make you a decent rig. Congrats on both purchases.

I have #1 and #5 and I gotta say this is about right

I don’t know how I feel about the Tahoe wheels over the regular Denali wheels.

It looks to be in pretty good shape for a gmt400 though, congrats!

The visor is my least favorite part of the whole thing, and that includes the radio wiring...yuck. It’ll be off there tomorrow afternoon.

I wish it had the Denali wheels, but I don’t hate the Tahoe ones. I might Plastidip them, I had good success with that on the Land Cruiser.

It’s actually in pretty good shape overall, there’s very little surface rust underneath and the body is very straight. It’ll pan out, just needs some love.

This is accurate. But man, compared to my Land Cruiser it’s like riding on a cloud...so I guess it’s at least a comfortable bus.

I forgot that the GX had the side swinging door. I don’t get it, you’ve got the best type on the LX/LC, and then you put the worst one on the GX/Prado. Weird stuff.

My wife loved the god forsaken full side swinging door when we had a RAV4 to the point it was a feature she was looking for when it came time to replace it. Fortunately basically nothing else in our price range offered one so we were able to get a regular hatch. I still have no idea why she loves those stupid things.

Yeah they are definitely comfortable. And it really does feel like youre operating a piece of machinery rather than just zipping around in some mere “Passenger car”

I’m not sure I knew this existed as something other than an Escalade. I mean, I know the Yukon / XL / Denali thing on the next generation, my father in law has had two identical ones back to back. But this... strikes me as back when they thought “yeah let’s slap a Cadillac badge on the nicest Tahoe with some body kit and see if it sells.” It turns out, yes.

It’s objectively worse than the Land Cruiser, but I was able to get the Miata and some cash as well. Mainly I wanted the Miata and some money, this truck is basically just to take my son to daycare and back.

Basically yeah, they dressed up the Yukon as a kind of rushed answer to the Lincoln Navigator, then decided they should do a Cadillac version as well...the Yukon actually came first. Buyers were simpler back then, give it leather and a soft ride and call it a Cadillac, you’ll sell a million.

I always liked these. They’re big, reliable, and tough, and semi-luxurious. No it’s not as off-road capable as a Land Cruiser and it’s not as well-built as a Land Rover but honestly for the price it’s almost perfect. I’d gladly have one.

Totally. It actually feels pretty solidly built for a turn of the century GM product, vast amounts of hard plastic interior aside. I never needed the Land Cruiser’s capability, so I won’t miss it. This should do fine.

You’ve got me looking for one now.

I do recommend trying to find the factory wheels that came on these. The C/K wheels currently on it are really doing no favors. But that’s just a suggestion, I can imagine you don’t want to sink too much money into it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the ABS light is due to a faulty speed sensor. It’s a common issue with them. Theyre not too hard or expensive to replace. Given the age though I might consider replacing the hub bearing at the same time. The level of difficulty will depend on how rusty it is.
