This past weekend I did a bunch of autocross and tested out a video recording setup. I just used an old Android phone mounted to my rear view mirror with a go pro pole mount with phone adapter. Now this was not the most stable setup since it didnt really fit the tiny mirror shaft but it came out acceptable to watch as a proof of concept. I will try suring up the connection next weekend.

Anyways, I used TrackAddict on my phone and then edited with RaceRender on my laptop to create the final product. It was pretty neat to get all of the data. Such as being able to see that I reached a max speed of 59.3 mph at the end of the course. Or that my revlimiter in second gear tops me out at 52 mph. This is obtained from the OBDII scanner over bluetooth as well as GPS in the phone.

The event above was the SCCA event I had done that weekend. Which was much better than the 2 day UMI performance autocross I had done Friday/Saturday. I had fun at both, but it was just a very different crowd and course design. I also have a video of that course below. SO much less smooth!

I love RaceRender, I’ve been using it for rally vids for years

It’s just so easy to use. Pairs up so easily with the Android app as well. And for autocross, the free version is perfect. I would definitely buy the full version for longer videos and other cool features.

I just got TrackAddict and I’m going to try it out this weekend at an event. I also got an OBD2 plug in.

In my first experiment, I don’t seem to see the data displayed with the video. I have a lot more experimentation to do (it’s not very intuitive for me) so I might figure it out, but will I have to use RaceRender to display it all? I thought it was all supposed to show up in TrackAddict’s video. I’m doing this to try to review between runs, and hope to have all the data with the video.

I see now that I can’t just pair the OBD2 dongle to the phone, and TrackAddict see that bluetooth connection, but I have to actively go into the settings and have the tell the video to show the information. Hopefully that gets me closer to my goal.

But why use RaceRender?

The only point of using race render is to edit the videos on my laptop. Yeah you can just output whatever video comes directly out of Trackaddict but it will not be trimmed properly and you cant adjust the displays and stuff. RaceRender is free and it directly ports everything from TrackAddict SUPER easily so its worthwhile. From there you can add little things like change the size/style of gauges, add some text, trim the video segments, combine multiple segments, and then easily upload to youtube from there. It just streamlines the process.

And yeah setting up the OBD inside the app is important. I’ve still found that sometimes it “forgets” and needs to be reconnected. Ive had to make my phone forget the bluetooth connect and reset it a couple times. Not sure if the issue is the dongle, my phone, the car, or the app. It is one of those “turn it on and off again six times” type of frustrating tech support things that works itself out.

When its working though, it creates pretty good results. Even though my videos are a little shakey, overall it came out pretty good. The overlays are pretty neat and relatively accurate. Refresh rate could be faster but I spent $10 for my OBD dongle, I would think a better one could improve that.

Thanks for the perspective.

I got one of the dongles (Veepeak) that TrackAddict says it plays well with for $30 (could have gotten the older one for $20, probably wasted $10) and there is definitely a lag in the rev information in my few experiments so far. Throttle position seems pretty close though, so that’s good, but the gear information is not working at all for some reason, so that’s annoying.

I think I have it about to where it will be useful, even if it doesn’t have everything the way I had hoped.

You also need to set how many data points the app is tracking. That will vastly affect the refresh rate. Make sure its only reading the 2 or 3 data points that you actually want, rather than the other dozen or so it might default to. It can also show you the refresh rate, mine has been somewhere around 1-1.4 hz which is pretty slow but usable. I’ve not really been able to get the gear indicator to work either. Sometimes it does but I think the app is guessing or something rather than reading any actual data on it. It seems like it reads changes in RPM to figure it out.

Throttle position and revs should be able to get pretty close depending on refresh rate. Ive had lag issues with both but it does get close enough to be usable.
