My Dad had a 2005 Legacy 2.5GT Wagon (with manual!) when I was a teenager. That car was an awesome sleeper.

Looked at the same gen Legacy for my used car search that ended today and I was shocked to find out how underpowered the non GT ones are...and less reliable than the turbo motor to boot.

Compared to the turbo models, the non-turbo models definitely feel underpowered (~80 more horsepower will do that). By itself though, it isn’t too bad. I’ve never had any real complaints about my ‘09 non-turbo Forester, which as the same engine as those non-turbo Legacys. It’s certainly not “fast”, but I still have no problems with both day to day driving as well as passing on the highway, etc.

The EJ253 (the non-turbo 2.5L found in most mid-late 2000s Subarus) is a much more robust engine than the previous EJ25s. While it can still happen, they don’t go through head gaskets like the old ones. I’d put them on par with the turbo motors - the H6s are still the reliability king though.

Definitely not underpowered shouldnt have said that. But I guess its just that now in the used market a non GT compares in price to cars like a g35x, s60 awd, and also just non AWD options like a 330i or Acura TL. Was just cross shopping all of them and its obviously weak in comparison. To get a clean GT in my area is around $9k as well so Its mostly just a product of luxury brands depreciating faster than Subarus.

I haven’t been keeping track of the recent prices of entry-mid-level luxury cars, but Subarus do tend to hold their value particularly well - to the point that if you’re not dead-set on a Subaru and want a deal, it might make sense to look elsewhere.

I saw your recent post on buying a 2nd gen TL - those are really nice. A friend of mine’s dad bought one with a stick new in 2007. Definitely one of the better cars a friend’s parent had at the time.

I have been loving it so far, and the amount of toys in that car for a 2005 is impressive. The nav screen looks super dated but is lightning fast responsive and works. And I can talk to my car to make calls, which is crazy coming from the Pathfinder.

Funny you mention the nav screen - it looked really good back in 2007! It was one of the better systems back then if I remember correctly.

Glad to hear you’re loving it so far!

If I got a 2014 map update it would be perfectly sufficient. I only use nav for long trips however and Waze is a must so I mostly just use it in the zoomed out view as a compass and general guide for when im hitting new backroads between areas near me.

I am definitely loving it so far, and the auxhilary input adapter goes in later today as well.
