I didn’t have time to test-drive both tonight as I had to watch the kiddos so the Mrs could go out and do her business thing.

The plan is to test drive the other tomorrow.

For those of you keeping score at home it’s a 2007 Outback 2.5 limited with 160k on the clock vs. a 2005 V70 2.4 with 125k on the clock. Both are one owner, no accidents, and clean titles.

One is cheap to fix and bound to have some problems depending on how well it was maintained. The other is not cheap to fix and bound to have problems depending on how well it was maintained. It’s a toss up.

This is true, also on tomorrow’s agenda is talk to my friendly local Volvo specialist about scheduling a ppi. The car is immaculate which is the only reason I didn’t just blow it off. The subby isn’t as clean and the mileage has me wondering about head gaskets. After tomorrow I will have driven both on similar roads.

First time I have ever driven an i5, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Both of these are going to be more of a headache than the Corolla and CX5. If you’re going to be spending money on maintenance regardless why not get something more interesting for you. Your wife is taking the CX5 right?

My boss’s wife has a 2011 V70 and it has been a fantastic car for them. The only thing that has gone bad was an alternator 3 years ago. Otherwise it’s just regular maintenance. I have not seen to many 160k outbacks still running well, usually they need or have head gaskets, numerous wheel bearings, axles and other things replaced at this point.

She is, though at this price point my other options are a high mileage slightly newer econobox or try and find a different commuter that might be more reliable but is more than one owner. Right now I would rather have my kiddos in the 05 v70 than the 13 Rio 5 that somehow had close 100k on the clock and was asking for more money.

I want to tell you to get the Subaru (my family has owned 8 of them with no real issues) but 160k is a lot of miles for a 10 year old car. The Volvo has a more reasonable mileage but is going to cost you more to run than the Outback.
