Kinja'd!!!

i need to get this on the roof of our Nissian Quest., I have two requirements:

1: dont damage the van

2: make sure the bike is still on the roof when I arrive after a 4 hr highway drive

i dont really want to buy a bike rack like Thule or similar as this will most likely be the only time I have to do this. I have the standard cross members that came with the van. I was thinking of putting a couple 2X4's front to back and tieing them down and the bike to that. I’m afraid the pedal will scrape the roof if I dont do that.

Any ideas?

If you’ve got factory crossbars, you might find a creative way to attach a fork mount. I had one of these bolted to a 3/4"x 4" poplar board in the back of a 4runner for almost three years as my only bike rack, much like this image . Could also use a scrap hub and some pipe clamps if you wanted to be really resourceful.

Yakima Blockhead, a plank of weather treated wood, a tension strap for the rear wheel to hold it to the plank and then whatever clamp fits your roof-rack crossbars. Use old bicycle tubing in between the clamp and your crossbar to keep it from scratching.

That or surf craigslist for a roof carrier.

Or skip the wood if you can space the roof rack well enough:

If I were going to lay it down on the roof, I’d start by taking one pedal off and rotating the bars 90°. To pad the roof, I’d use a moving blanket or cardboard or both.

Take the pedals off for the trip.

You need something soft like a big roll of foam, a couple of sleepings bags or something. I think you would probably find a cheap bike rack on craigslist though, or goodwill or something

I believe what you are looking for is a blow up mattress. Sandwich the mattress between the roof of the minivan and the bike. Attach everything securely. Don’t drive on a windy day.

You can also use padding or blankets to protect the roof of the van.

You could also wrap the bike in bubble wrap, then throw it on the roof and tie it down.

Essentially, you can carry anything up there as long as it’s secured and not really heavy.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, I give you upside down bike. All you need is some para cord.

Kinja'd!!!

Step 2 would be to search craigslist for a used Thule or Yakima fork mount tray. They should be $25-$50.

You could also buy a simple fork mount , then attach it to a 2x4 that is attached to the side rails on the quest. A second 2x4 across the rails can be used to strap down the rear tire.

so long as you don’t have hydraulic brakes...they don’t like being upsidedown and hydraulic fluid doesn’t like car paint.

yea i’d rather avoid getting a bikerack off craigslist. the foam isn’t a bad idea, could probably hit up Home Cheapo. The sleeping bag would work except I think its supposed to rain for the ride up there

The brakes are completely sealed, they aren’t going to leak out.

I don’t know I just googled upside down bike on car. I use a thule fork mount tray or hitch rack for my bikes.

You say that...but hang a bike upside down for a while and 1 in 5 leaks a little. Not worth it for me.

Shimano is mineral oil though, sram is DOT right? His bike is shimano so not a big deal if a drop or two come out, may just have to pump the levers a bit after transport.

yeah mineral oil isn’t bad, its the DOT stuff. Shimano is mineral, SRAM and Hayes are DOT.

If it’s a one-time trip, personally I’d be pulling the wheels and finding space inside the van.

If you tie down the brake handle to the bar with a rubber band the system is closed and no air can enter the system*. Not matter which way the bike is stored.

*correct bleeding mandatory

Inside the car is no option?

We used to transport 2 Bikes and luggage for two weeks in a Audi A3 without any problem.

Unmount the pedals as well es both wheels (saddle and post problably have to go as well, but since it is a van...

.Transport the bike upright (something like a small styrofoam block under the chainwheel), tie it to the side. Store the wheels and pedals in convinient location.

You will not have to lower more than one seat for this.

Exactly. Or you will have all the dead bugs all over your bike. Worst: Salt on wet streets (dunno if you use salt to melt the ice on streets and freeways over there).

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, btw., it seems the lever of your QR is on the side of your disc (fork). If so, change it to the other side. Because if you have to open it while the disc is still hot you risk a serious burn.

And next time you lay your bike down, lay it on the non-drive side so neither rear nor front derailleur will suffer potential damage or get out of adjustment. A twisted chaincage of a rear derailleur can drive you nuts.

In Germany they scatter salt on the highways to prevent ice in winter time. If you have some of that left in spring (can be May in extreme cases) and drive through rain, some of that spray will find it’s way into your bike. Corrosion is coming!

In Utah they try and mix in some road with the salt.

Nasty stuff! So you get the chip first and then the salt to finish the work? It’s horrible what salt can do to magnisium fork casting.

But great place for mountainbiking! I always wanted to visit the Moab trails.

When does the next Rampage take place and is it still in Utah?

This is probably your best choice. A buddy of mine just mounted a 2x4 inthe bed of his truck with 3 of these attached. It was perfect for our weekend trip. At first glance I was gonna recommend looking into a Seasucker (suction cup mounted bike rack), but then I saw the low usage requirement.
