I hear you. That car had such a potential to be a spiritual successor to the CRX. I mean, the CR-Z isn’t awful, but it could have been so much more. Put the 1.5T in there from the Civic Hatchback and it would be some of the most fun you could have on 4 wheels.

what do you mean that the CRX wasn’t good?

A nibble good looking 2 seater honda, at the time it was great.

Seriously. Either make it fast and make a CRX Si successor or make is stupid economical and make it a CRX HF successor. Or... both.

don’t tell me what to do after you trick me with a picture of a CRX and my poor reading skills.

Questionable engineering decisions as well as terrible marketing and pricing campaign made it terrible. I only looked at it when it first came out, the mileage was terrible for a hybrid and it seemed to be confused as to what it wanted to be.

Same issue as the Lexus CT200h. Was it fast? No. It’s a hybrid. Was it economical? ...not really. So why stick around?

I had been in a mood for a while, the mood where I’d sell my ITR and buy a CR-Z and swap it (K20, K24?). The mood wasnt strong enough that I’d do it, I love my car too much for that, but still, I do believe that the CR-Z is a good basis to start a project. I do agree with you in that they sucked in stock form.

The CT200h didn’t need to be fast, and it got pretty good gas mileage. It offered the drivetrain of a Prius in an attractive Lexus body, and I think it sold decently well for some time.

Because some executive had the brilliant idea to take the legacy of the economical and fun CRX and add a Hybrid system while reusing existing hybrid and chassis parts to help keep the cost down.

It’s like a modern remake of an 80's classic movie. It was never going to be good, or if it’s good, it’ll never be equal to the original. The only successful remakes (Cars or movies or whatever) turn out to be good in a different way than the inspiration.

Part of the problem with the CT 200h boils down to... the aerodynamics were nothing remarkable on that car.

It was economical compared to anything in its class, but the numbers didn’t look that impressive. (Also, it really didn’t help that they used the Prius powertrain, at least for the US market, where more power is demanded, especially in a luxury-tier hatchback. For Europe, it was fine.)

It was a perfectly fine 40 MPG (city or highway, and that’s important to remember, city didn’t hurt it like every other car) entry level Lexus cruiser, though.

Another huge part of the problem is that Honda’s IMA hybrid system simply wasn’t very good, ever. The original Insight only worked due to extreme aerodynamics that would’ve been written off as “dorky” on the CR-Z, an aluminum unibody that would’ve been too expensive (the CR-Z instead used a cut-down Fit platform, and left too much weight in somewhere even then), and an engine that offered extremely mediocre performance even for the early 2000s.

Compromised (and heavy) chassis, poor hybrid system, underwhelming engine, The only real positive was that they offered a manual.

Yeah, bad execution on most fronts.

You know it’s bad when a Prius c is 200 pounds lighter, despite being bigger. (Sure, it also isn’t very good, but the hybrid system works well, and with an Otto cycle engine and suspension upgrades, it could probably challenge a CRZ on performance, while getting better mileage.)

Nah. That’s my dad’s girlfriend’s ‘91 CRX HF. She’s owned it since new.

Looks pretty clean! I think it’s cool that she kept it for so long too.
