Some rubbing compound or scratch remover will take the yellow paint off. As far as the missing paint and dents, you’re on your own.

I ran the side of my mom’s car down a bollard protecting the pumps at a gas station. The dang thing was just low enough to be below the windows, just high enough to wreck all the panels on that side.
I backed into one just like you hit while driving my mother-in-law’s G-35 coupe. She was really mad about it, thinking that I was hot-dogging her car or something. I was just backing out of a parking space. She cooled off a few weeks later when she tore the front bumper loose on a high curb in a parking lot. Then she realized that it really is hard to see anything out of her car.
It happens. Don’t sweat it.

How did you get it all the way down the side? Moving that fast? Somehow missed the sound of that grinding the side of your car?
If moving fast, you’re probably lucky that you didn’t run directly into it with all the drama of airbag inflation and other excitement (up to and including the potential for death).
Since this is an FCA product and depending on the age/mileage, you may just want to call your insurance company as there’s a pretty good chance they’ll total it.

Wasn’t going fast at all, but i did have momentum... I just somehow managed to nail it at the apex of my turn.
I was in one aisle, with the parking spaces faced away from the store entrance, and decided to turn into the other aisle, facing toward the store entrance (and a slightly shorter walk). I have done the same thing in the same lot about a dozen times, but for some reason i put the pole in my blind spot (and the painted yellow concrete portion below my passenger-side window sill) and since it was on the inside of my turn, I managed to drag the side along the pole.
It wasn’t dramatic, though the initial hit was pretty loud. Otherwise, it wasn’t a dramatic crash, so much as a sad grind.
Honestly not sure what my insurance is gonna think about this one.

That first incident you noted... the yellow-painted concrete portion was below the edge of the passenger window, and i wasn’t specifically looking for the black light pole against the black sky, so I didn’t see it in my blind spot.
I’m only sweating it because its my daily, and its my only. The damage is done, whatever... but whatever the outcome is - body shop or totaled by insurance - I’m looking at a rental for a week or so, and then emergency car shopping. Which I have been putting off because nobody hands out free cars anymore, howboutda?
Or drive it as is and stick to the plan.

Two words: RUBBING COMPOUND.
Seriously - it works. Takes the top layer of paint (from the scratch, in this case yellow) off without damaging your paint underneath. Trust me, I know... sideswiped MY OWN OTHER CAR a couple weeks back trying to get in to a tight parking spot on the street. Unbelievable.
I used some ~15 year old TurtleWax rubbing compound and you can’t even tell anything happened, at least paint wise - obviously it won’t repair and panel damage/deep gouges; it’s more cosmetic. Give it a shot!

Exactly. The height of the concrete portion is never high enough.
I watched another guy do the same thing in his Tacoma. He was fortunate to have a tube step which took most of the blow. The bollard he hit was barely taller than his tire and didn’t have a pole on top.

I guess the picture doesn’t do it justice; it’s not just paint, I have some structural damage. I don’t think the door is salvagable. It won’t open or close without some considerable force. I think the frame damage is manageable, but the door is toast, I’m almost certain.

Thanks, i appreciate that.
Nobody seems terribly judgmental about this; I honestly expected to get some flak. I’m pleasantly surprised that everyone seems pretty sympathetic.
I feel like a bonehead, for sure, but it was truly an accident, and at least nobody was hurt. And depending on who you ask and their opinions about the Jeep Patriot, some would claim that nothing of value was lost.
I walked the store manager out there to survey the damage, and he shrugged it off, said he felt sorry for me though. He stood there a bit to kinda take it in, seemed a bit surprised at how much damage my car sustained while the pole was just missing some paint.

It’s a fact of life. I backed into an empty parking space in a crowded restaurant lot one time trying to get out of the spot I was in only to find that someone left a boat trailer in that space. No boat. Just a trailer. At night. At a restaurant.
I was looking where I was going and had really good visibility too (it was a VW Scirocco, with a big glass hatch window). I got a nice dent exactly where a hitch would have been had I had one. You just can’t win sometimes.

This is why I hang out on Oppo. We’re here to help each other up, not cut each other down.
I have a pretty meh opinion of the Jeep Patriot based on a rental I had, but that’s why there is a diversity of cars for diverse people. The loss of your car is a loss to you, and that’s what’s important.
