He learned how to use a jack and stands, and how to take the wheels off. He got a primer on how brakes work. His were in pretty good shape, all things considered.

We also confronted an automotive mystery that has plagued my life:

IS THERE A GLUE THAT CAN ACTUALLY HOLD A WINDSHIELD-MOUNTED REAEVIEW MIRROR?

I suspect not. We search, bit we never find.

Maybe try a transparent epoxy?

Right on! That’s a heck of a first car.

I wound up using Gorilla Glue for my rear view mirror. After 3 failures/brands I was desperate.

Try sanding the glass and metal widget a bit as well.

What about 3m adhesive strips. The rubbery adhesive tape with the red cover.

Nice, good parenting.

I know I mentioned in the past that my mom had the next gen T-Bird when I was a little kid. I visited her several weeks ago, and my brother cleaned out her garage, and saved a box of junk for me to look through. He put these aside, knowing I would want them:

It’s a pic I took with a Polaroid instant camera about 35 years ago, when I was a little kid - I had a fascination with those cameras. In the pic, I can see my mom’s T-Bird, and my dad’s Horizon (I am not sure what is in the driveway).

The emblem is off the car. The car was off the road by 1985 (don’t make em like they used to?), but my dad held on to it for a short time after, and I think it just fell off. Fun keepsake, and I think it is the same emblem as on your slightly older car.

I’ve used the rear view mirror adhesive kits (locktite brand, maybe?) they sell at retail auto parts stores on a couple of different cars over the years. If you follow the directions to the letter, they’ll hold for years.

And awesome parenting, by the way.

The rear view mirror glue does work, but we have found that you have to leave it on 24 hours plus without the mirror for it to set properly and not fall off.
