My town’s garden club has an event of releasing monarch butterflies. They are trying to give the species a helping hand at reestablishing itself in our area.

I’m sorry. Not car related.

I am 100% all for this, but is that a butterfly in an envelope?! Who put it in there? How does this work?

they don’t stay in one area though. They just stay long enough to breed and when the caterpillars turn to butterflies they continue the migration from mexico to canada

They package them in little wax paper envelopes. 150 butterflies were released. Some were tagged in an effort to track their progress. It doesn’t harm them. I paid $7 to release a butterfly. The proceeds go to various efforts by the garden club. They have a lot going on that they put time in to.

Oh I know they don’t stay here. I believe the effort is to create a “hub” of sorts. A home base for these butterflies. In hopes that future generations will return to this park. There’s been a noted decline of the Monarch butterfly in this area. The garden club is trying to get things going again. Milkweed plants are also being planted around town. These kind people are trying to heal a broken chain.

I was just talking to a customer last week about how few Monarchs and Red Admirals I’d seen this year. Fantastic project.

Urban sprawl, climate change, deforestation, habitat destruction, etc. All causes of population decline

They actually refrigerate the butterflies. They’re basically asleep in the envelopes. As they warm up they move around until they can fly off

I happen to live and work outdoors in a fairly rural part of the UK, and the drop has been noticeable the last couple of years. Most likely I’m thinking due to climate change, our summers are much better and hotter now, enough so that it’s starting to really disturb my work. It’s a shame that it affects the wildlife as well.
