Kinja'd!!!

My old Galaxy s3 is about to give up the ghost.

I need a new phone under 200 bucks and my friend is selling me this, has anyone here had any realtime experiences w/ it that they want to share here?

Holy crap this thing’s old...

Snapdragon 801, that’s like from a BlackBerry Passport from 2013. Aside from the gimmicky camera there’s nothing really going for it, it’s even running Lollipop 5.0. Shouldn’t really get anything not running at least Marshmallow 6 or Nougat 7.

Consider these instead:

Newer mid-range SoC with decent battery life.

That gimmicky camera is basically why im even considering it. I like to take pictures, and read a lot of good stuff about that.

Just buy the Moto G5 Plus for $180 from Amazon. The one without stupid Amazon ads on it. I got that same phone for my wife a couple months ago for $240. It’s a much better phone than the Lumix dealie. The camera is decent, but as a phone it’s sooo much better. Buy it.

Oh yeah definitely.

Very up to date indeed.

I had considered Motorolas but not this model, namely the Moto Z with add ons (id have to save up for that though.)

it’s neat, but I’d probably have issue with the bulk. It’d be one thing if it had newer hardware/software, but I can’t imagine the tradeoff is worth it. Thinking a more modern phone with an attachable lens would perform well enough. Then again, if you’re not a power user (just texts and phone calls) maybe it’s a fit.

I’d consider having it as a second phone, popping the sim in when I’m somewhere I’d be using the camera a lot. Then again, you could probably get similar performance for less with a similar sized stand alone camera. It’s an odd device that makes you think about how useful the combo is... and while I like Panasonic a lot, the phone experience may be lacking due to them not being a major player in the market. Be interested in your opinions should you buy it.

Bulk is not an issue with me to be honest, i want to like it. Yes, you can... i just like the duality of it being able to have that shooting power. I wouldnt consider myself a power user... all i have as apps is FB, IG, Spotify and Netflix however they are large apps and am not sure if the Panasonic can handle it.

Camera it’s decidedly so/so. As a shooter is been a let down. Rest of the phone is great though

I hear the camera is actually pretty great for what it is. I suspect the phone is mid range at best. If the price is right I’d do it

For what it’s worth, the review of the camera on the CM1 (I don’t see a review for the 10, which I imagine is newer), is surprisingly positive:

I agree the camera is nothing special.

I’m a big photo nerd and a phone with a “real” camera like this Panasonic deal appeals to me, but I wouldn’t want to use an outdated phone just because of the camera.

I have a super small (for a real camera) Olympus m43 kit that I bring with me in my work bag. I still end up taking tons of phone photos. I have a Moto X Pure and its camera is still better than the G5 Plus but it’s definitely not a “real” camera. I’m good at tweaking phone photos in Snapseed though.

The camera Moto Mod has a nice zoom lens but the sensor is small so image quality isn’t appreciably better than other high end phone cameras.

I’d recommend getting a phone that’s just a good phone and then a small camera with a 1" sensor like Sony RX100 series, Canon G9X/G7X, Panasonic LX10, etc.

Yeah my caves it’s a gh2 for when I want to take good pics but the phone is what I have handy most times and it’s camera has been a frustration for me a little.

I dunno what phone your wife has but the unlocked ZTE Axon 7 has a pretty solid camera and it’s Verizon compatible. Could pass the G5 Plus off to her and get the Axon. My sister just got one for $369 from Newegg (at my recommendation of course).

Z is going to be out of your budget, even the Z Play. Plus Lenovo ruined the Z2 by cutting the battery, just to make it a few mm thinner, but the real reason was to force you to buy a battery MotoMod.

But if you can find a Z Play in the budget, I’d say go for it.

Only real downside is the lack of NFC. Android Pay is awesome and you can’t use it without NFC.

Midrange? Not even. The processor is from 2013... for a phone released in 2016. It has the same hardware as a OnePlus One and a BlackBerry Passport.

My Moto X Pure has NFC but no fingerprint sensor. I haven’t tried Android Pay because when I installed it, it required that I set a PIN or pattern lock to keep my phone secure. I know that’s good practice but I hate that shit. Putting my credit cards in the chip reader and waiting for it to process and then immediately angrily beep at me is annoying, but not as annoying as a PIN or pattern lock on my phone. I should get a phone with a fingerprint reader, but otherwise this phone is still fine.

Well Z Play is now discontinued for the Z2, new one is more like $469+ (it’s a ridiculous $800 up here in Canada...).

You could however score a Z Play (which frankly is better than the Z2) for $350.
