I personally think that Google is inherently evil and has nobody’s best interests at heart and why work there unless you want everyone to think you’re smart and you enjoy free lunch and hot rock massages and a swing set in your cubicle?
I haven’t read Dude’s manifesto, but I personally believe that Tech is diabolically sexist and Boom-Boom Room and maybe I read too much liberal media (well, I probably most certainly do), but hey: my simpathy meater is lymp.
Anyhow, Dude wrote a rejoinder that got printed in the Wall Street Journal if you want to read it.

I share your view on Google and feel the same way with Amazon, Wally World and Ebay.

I mean, hey: I buy crap from Amazon all the time and I use a Nexus smart phone. I’d be curious to try working at an Amazon warehouse, maybe once I retire from teaching. But still: they’re all evil. I know a guy, an Oppo in fact, who worked at Apple for a while. My daughters swear by Apple stuff but I want nothing to do with any of it except to listen to music on an iPod.

Also, in addition to hot rock massages and swingsets, Googlers enjoy driving up the cost of housing well beyond what locals can afford, blocking traffic with their buses, and generally gentrifying whole communities that didn’t need it. Helps them forget that they’re working in the belly of Big Brother.

Douchbag is not blatantly sexist (at least not in today’s society). There’s actually a bit of an argument over the term in some feminist circles.
Douching is terrible for the overall reproductive health of women. Women only use douchebags because they were told their vaginas were dirty or smelly etc... The douche deserves to be mocked as it is terrible for women.

It is going to depend on who you ask. There was an article floating around linkedin the other day as part of the fall out from google dude bro, it advocating removing any remotely sexist phrase from your company vocabulary, the one example I remember was “flirting” as in “flirting with disaster”.

I’m over this guy. It’s not that I disagree so much with the main points of his “manifesto”, but that his firing was 100% justified. He works for a large company, and both created a “hostile work environment” and a shit-ton of negative publicity.
On the other hand, it wouldn’t surprise me if this is all calculated and he’s just looking for a payout in his lawsuit. Be as annoying as possible, get the company to settle quickly for large $$$ amount in exchange for you to STFU. In that case, things seem to be going well so far.

I wonder. I think that Google and its CEO are exposed to some criticism about their summary firing of the guy, but that they hold the stronger hand and a much larger budget for litigation. Dude is already making his case in front of alt-right nationalist media outlets. It’ll be interesting to watch, but I’m guessing that he is 14 seconds into his 15 seconds of fame. We’ll see.

Agreed that the company’s legal budget will be higher. However, they are also a for-profit, publicly traded company. Their responsibility is to their shareholders, not to their idealism. They need to make a business decision to do whatever is in the company’s best interest. Whether that is spending the $$$ to fight the guy and win but still keep him in the news, or just paying him to go away is TBD.

I agree with you entirely, but I suggest that among the shareholders, the key people, political correctness will win the day. My guess, which I have to disclose is at least somewhat a
hope
on my part, is that now that James Damore has aligned himself with the Bannonites, for Google to settle with Damore would be perceived as a concession to the Alt-right. If Damore’s intentions really were pure, he wouldn’t be talking to Breitbart.
My guess is that the Alt- left are highly critical of the new Google CEO because he didn’t have a bunch of people at Google HQs gather and sing Kumbaya , and sacked Damore instead. CEO Dude may well do a lot of Kumbaya singing moving forward, but not with Damore around.
Let’s watch what happens and talk some more as it does.

There are solid academic folk who do not line up with the research that James Damore supposedly cites in his “manifesto” which I have no current intention of reading. Damore’s intentions are questionable and so is his socialization.
