I went to a local car audio place that has a good reputation. The radio restoration involved adding an aux input to the stock radio, but it is in the rear of the unit. They plugged a cord in, but the cord is dying.

This place is going to put an input in the dash so this is not a problem.

They are also doing a security system, including gps tracking.

Old Cassette players are cool because they are super easy to tap an AUX jack into. You can just solder the jack into the play head’s solder joints with a resistor between the jack and the PCB and play your tunes straight into the existing hardware. If you don’t bodge it too bad you can even keep your tape functionality.

I called and told him to tear out all of that old stuff and put in a double din touchscreen GPS unit with LEDs and a red, motorized carbon fiber lid that slides out and over the screen when you turn off your car! Also, the display flashes with the beat of the music! Oh and I told him to add MORE LEDs!

No need to thank me

The GPS is a nice addition. She’s looking pretty sano there.

Tell me more...

*looks at defunct tape deck in rx7*

I added an aux input to the AM radio in my chevelle but that was a lot simpler than a tape deck.

I did something similar in the Chevelle, though that was just an AM radio - I found where the receiver went into the amplifier (conveniently via wire, not a circuit board) and basically wired in a switch so it’s either AM radio or aux-in and tucked it up in the dash. Works pretty well, but it still sounds like a 45 year old AM radio :)

There are a number of tutorials out there on the web. You will have to tweak them for your radio. When I modified my friend’s radio I followed this instructables: http://www.instructables.com/id/Auxiliary-Port-for-Any-RadioCassette-Player-Monsoo/

I added a DPDT switch to be able to switch between the tape and the AUX because why not.

The big risk once you get it working is that it is theoretically possible to overdrive the input and do all kinds of damage to your radio.
