Happened to me in college on the steepest hill in town. I’d say take it to the bike shop and see about warranty coverage. It should never break, but with an Acera derailleur, it’s probably just easier to get a new and better one. I recommend The Bicycle Garage Indy if you don’t have a shop you like.

Man, you’ve got bad luck with gears and chains.

Time to single speed it.

It appears to be the hanger and not the derailleur itself that broke off? Should be a cheap fix, but still sucks of course.

Did you have a chain tool handy to turn it into a temporary single speed?

Oof, well, after the walk back home, at least it will just be a new hanger. If you’ve got a chain tool you COULD splice the chain to be in a single gear, but otherwise gotta duke it out until the hanger is replaced.

I believe the thing isn’t supposed to be separated from the other thing there... (I can’t say I’ve see a derailleur just bust clean off like that.)

Was it a stick or did you over-shift into the spokes?

Either way, an equivalent replacement will be pretty cheap. You might be able to get a used take-off from the local shop.

Congratulations on your new three speed! Pain in the ass to have it happen when you are out and about though.

That’s what happens when you’re granny shifting, instead of double clutching, like you should.

Singlespeed conversion time! Seriously, as others said, it’s just the hanger. Get a good replacement one that is CNC cut from 6061 or 7075 aluminum. Also, there’s a decent chance that either the derailleur over-travelled the limit and caused the break or it is now bent from the event. In either case, the amount of work to get it sorted isn’t really worth it for an Acera. They are pretty much the lowest-end and essentially throw-away parts. I recommend either a Deore part at the bare minimum or a willingness to accept another failure. If you don’t ride much an Alivio is probably be OK. I’ve seen them blow up but usually after getting up there in miles. Sometimes, though, you can find great deals on new old stock discontinued Deore’s and XT’s that make them a better deal than a lower end new part.
