Gambler 500?

I got an email a couple days ago from the organizer of Stateline Rallycross . He wants to sponsor the RallyMetro to run the Gambler 500-Illinois ... which I did not know was a thing. I remember reading David Tracy’s story about the Michigan version, and it sounds like a stupid amount of fun. There are two big hurdles I have to cross.

First and foremost, I need to get permission from my wife, as I’d really prefer to stay married. Second, I need to figure out how to get license plates for the RallyMetro. I live in the part of Illinois that requires emissions testing for all OBD2 vehicles, and the RallyMetro has a perpetual SES light on. That never mattered to me before, because I had no intention of putting it on the road.

It’s an intriguing development, and one I can hope make happens. Wish me luck Oppo!

1). Take care of some project or something she’s been wanting you to do for a long time and rack up those brownie points.

2). Register it out of state somewhere that has no emissions testing. I hear Montana is a good one and you can buy a PO box there and use it as an address to register a car. Just have the PO box forward all mail to your home address and you’re set!

These sound like so much fun. A buddy of mine wants to run my ex-LeMons Audi in the northwest version.

I thought about turning the Metro into a Lemons car, but that’s too rich for my blood.

Did the Nebraska one earlier this year. It was awesome, even though we forgot the tent poles. (Seriously, what kind of tent comes in two separate bags?)

Lots of interesting roads, lots of camaraderie, lots of fun people to BS with at camp.

BTW, I made sure my wife was happy by suggesting that she visit her friends in Boston before the Gambler.

Do you have any friends/family who still live in Illinois, but outside the area that requires testing? It’s just Chicagoland and Metro St. Louis - parts of Kane, Will, Kendall and McHenry counties don’t require it, and beyond that, none of the outlying counties do.

It is too damn expensive, mine was done on my shop owner’s dime, his idea, and I had been given the car so so it made sense to use it. I now wish I had the car back to stock, it was a good car and now it just sits.

Does your state have the option of a temporary tag? In Texas, I could get a 5-day permit for pretty much anything for around $15 and you print it off at home.

Yeah, I’d have to put a group together and we’d have to pay out of our own pocket ... ain’t gonna happen.

That’s going to be the first thing I try. A buddy of mine lives in Bloomington.

There you go! Solves one of your two issues - I’ve got nothing for the other one, sorry!! :)

Yup, and every spouse is different.

Only possible issue with that buddy in Bloomington is that you might need to title it in his name, worst case - I’m no expert, though—

She’s been very permissive of my racing shenanigans, but this is a big ask.

Yeah, I remember buddies of mine doing this in high school, but I’m sure the system has changed since then.

If your buddy can’t register it you can use my address. You should be able to do it at your DMV too.

I have Crusty registered to my dad’s address back in Broadview and renewed it in Galena last year. No problems.

I’m keeping the Gambler on my radar. I have a ton of PTO built up and that looks like fun just to watch.

Thanks! That’s good to know that they let you register a car at a place other than your home address. My local DMV is super helpful. I’ll email or text you if I can’t use my friend’s address.

No problem. When I first retitled Crusty in Illinois they didn’t even ask for bills or mail at that address as proof. But.. I just remembered that I did it at a Currency Exchange in Elgin.

The DMV by you is about the best one in the area. I don’t think it’ll be an issue.

I’ll keep the Currency Exchange as a backup, but the Lombard DMV has always been incredibly friendly and helpful so it probably won’t be a problem.

Now to convince the wife to let me have another entire weekend away ....

Lombard is the only one to go to in your area. The CE has fees but they’re minimal.

The second part? Can’t help there. Make it a family thing?

Gotcha. We’re between family campers right now. My wife won’t camp without AC and a toilet.

She’s let me do a lot of racing stuff this year. Hopefully this won’t be a bridge too far.
