Although I really want to pick up a 2nd gen gs400, its hard to ignore the countless g35 sedans on the market. I think for me to be swayed by the infiniti it would have to be the second gen, which is better in pretty much every way than the first gen sedan, except I find it a little bulbous and ugly.
The specific one I am looking at (pictured) is on a little drop and nice wheels though, and I think that improves the overall look a lot. Color choice is on point as well. Its not like the 2nd gen GS is pretty either, but I think its at least a lot more simple and less bulbous.
Anyways, should I do it? Its hard to argue a 2007 vs a 1998 lexus, and the gap in age really shows in the interior.
Any oppopinions?

It seems your choice is an older Toyota or a newer Nissan. I don’t think you can go wrong with either, but you know what Oppo thinks: Older is cooler and better.

Also v8 is cooler and better! But I have never owned a truly modern car and the 07 G would feel like a spaceship to me. Maybe its time to make that leap.

In my area anyway, these seem to attract people who have the stereotypical BMW driving ethos, but don’t want the maintenance bills. I don’t mean that in a good way.

Im not saying sedans are immune from the bros but I feel like thats mostly a g35 coupe thing. But yeah the GS has a lot less of a stereotype attached.

Oh yeah, same around here but mostly coupes and first gen sedans. This particular example is really well kept and owned by an adult, which is good. Half of the ones on craigslist look beat and I wouldnt go near them.

Yeah, I have a friend who doesn’t even own one, and he bitches about the Lexus Casio Clock every chance he gets - he really hates it. Luckily, the 3rd gen ISes managed to finally rectify it in 2014.
What I don’t really get is, why is the G analog clock an oval shape? It always looked a bit distorted to me.

Offer 1800 and you can have 90s lexus quirkiness and luxury for a couple years. I am looking at a couple in the $4k-6k range and am considering if its worth it to spend the full 6k and get an immaculate GS430 with 80k miles...

Yes, I believe awd and manual is possible. There are actually a lot of 3 pedal G’s for sale near me, and all for very very cheap for how much car you’re getting.
And I am selling my pathfinder for whatever I end up getting so it better be good!

Yeah, the older sedans are often beat, and the coupes douchebro’d out. Definitely pay attention for a mature owner.
The 2006+ M might be a nice alternative, pay a little more for more car.

Ive owned 1998, 1999, 2002, 2002, 2001, 2003 but guess what? All the early 2000s cars were model years designed in the 90s. Around 2005-2007 is the jump to what seems really modern to me.

I see you decided to to with an IS but if you change your mind we have a G37 that’s probably pretty similar. It’s been a rock solid car with really good steering and decent handling. The power is good but could use some more low end grunt.

Good car market out here with NYC and DC both within reach. I actually love doing a roadtrip to get the perfect car, but this time I think itll be more of a buy whichever one has no rust situation. My choices are GS400s, is300s, and g35s all in the sub 140k mile range, so I dont think ill go too wrong.

Assuming you’re looking at rwd, the G37S is the one to get of this generation.
The G35 sport package has a viscous LSD, bigger brakes with 330mm rotors in front but still sliding calipers, stiffer suspension, quicker steering rack, and sport seats. The sport package could also be packaged with active steering which also comes with almost-too-stiff shocks.
The G37 sport package no longer offered the active steering option but added 4-piston front 360mm brakes and 2-piston rears.

That is a very healthy sport package, and probably worth it just for the LSD. Unfortunately literally every g35 of that gen for sale within 200 miles of me is AWD, mostly journey package. I want RWD but I honestly would settle with anything if its clean. Not like the GS400 is going to come close to the handling of even the non sport package g35 anyway.

Last year I flirted with the idea of a G and test drove several. I was looking for an awd sport package coupe, because the awd sport package sedan has no LSD, brakes, or upgraded suspension. It’s only a body kit, wheels and seats. The awd coupe sport package has everything except the quicker steering rack, so it has the brakes, LSD, and stiffer suspension. It’s only automatic transmission though.
The base suspension and open diff is ok but the sport package is very worth it. The rwd sport package coupe with the quicker steering rack and less weight on the front is the most fun, but the awd sport package coupe was also pretty damn decent.
I of course went a different direction with my 335xi coupe instead but try if you can to get the sport pack.

Awd + rear LSD was the main draw for me. I came very close to buying one. The 7-speed auto is okay but it was a noticeable step down from the BMW 135is DCT I was replacing, and the ZF 8-speed in new BMWs. The only option to upgrade the shocks & springs on the awd is to go with Fortune Auto full coilovers. The power is pretty good but doesn’t come close to touching the tuning potential of a turbo I6 BMW.
So, my 335xi, the stock suspension was super soft (but there are way more aftermarket options, and I redid everything in mine), the brakes are 348mm with basic sliding calipers but I’m about to upgrade the pads, rotors, lines, etc, and the rear diff is open but the car still puts down power fine and works great in the snow with my Pilot Alpins.
But it’s stick and makes a ton more power.
