Hey oppo,
So the SX4 needs new tie rods. The problem is my dad wants to use a mutual friend to do it for “cheap” and we’ll buy the parts; I’d rather take it to a guy I trust who can get the parts and do the work 100% correctly.
Anwyay, my dad found Moog tie rods; any experience with them? I have never heard of them before and really don’t know where to start in finding good tie rods. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It’s a 09 SX4.

I’ve used a lot of Moog stuff over the years, and rarely have a problem with them. But I’ve also rarely had them for more than a couple years, so I can’t speak to long term reliability.

I am not sure if it’s still the case, but for a long time Moog parts were the ones to use. Very good quality.

From my experience over the past several years and different cars, Moog is really good quality. Haven’t bought their tie rods, but wheel bearings, sway bar end links, and ball joints were all good. Sway bar end links were actually an improvement over OEM on my Subaru.

Good stuff. When I worked at a parts warehouse we carried only oem or better replacments. Moog, ac delco and bremsen where our main products

I dont think tie rods are that hard to replace. I’m also pretty sure you will need an alignment after. You could do it yourself and bring it to a good alignment shop. If they are good they would probably pick up on anything you messed up (given you can make it all the way there to begin with)

That’s my general feeling on all of it. The shop i recommended did all my suspension work and has an alignment rack on site. My dads friend doesnt...nor does he have tools that I know of.

Your dad’s friend can put the stuff on the car but it has to be aligned by a pro anyway.

Can confirm, Moog is the good stuff.
If you’re doing inner tie rods as well as outer, get an inner bellows clamp as well (or just ziptie the SOB, but metal snap-clamps usually hold better).

MOOG is a NASCAR supplier. So if you’re replacing steering components you may only be able to turn left after installing them.

Well, if he puts the stuff on and you take it to an alignment shop you can have them check it for jackassery.

No it doesn’t. The rear wheels are not being touched, so you can still do a string alignment in the driveway.

Moog is good stuff usually. They are pretty easy to replace but you will absolutely need an alignment after.

lol. I used to work at an Autozone, and everyone would buy the Moog because of the zerks. Turns out, most of them never do anything about it anyways and then the part lasts just as long as the one without the zerk. lol

MOOG are also one of the better aftermarket brands. The only downside is that turn left thing that Takuro Spirit pointed out, then theres the fact you’ll start to talk with a heavy southern drawl and the only beer you can buy afterwards is Coors Light or Busch.

You might be able to get away with it but PBR is hipster now so you might be in violation of some code. BTW I checked and Busch is no longer an “Official Nascar sponsor” so its off the list.
