It also used to say who shared the post.

Like that we could all stare at that person. You know who you are!

X shared a post by X was always a sure sign that X was pretty full of it.

This is a good idea, knowing the identity of the sharer. Owning one’s actions is kind of self policing.

So I have a story I wanted to share with you guys, one that most people I know haven’t even heard. Not that it’s much of a secret or anything, just that I’ve never really found a good way to work it into a conversation without it seeming really weird or out of place. But on Reddit, you don’t need context, so I guess I’ll just go for it.

This all takes place about a year and a half, maybe two years ago. I was at my house, just doing what I normally do (just poking around on the internet or playing games or whatever), when I heard about this great new trial program that Amazon was putting out in my city. The name of the program was Amazon prime X, and it worked like this:

For normal Amazon Prime you get the free two day shipping as one of the biggest perks for signing up. All the sign-up was was an extra fee every month, only a couple of bucks, and you could get free two day shipping on almost any order you made on Amazon. With Amazon Prime X, they dropped this down to same day delivery, still for free! The only difference from regular Prime was that you would pay like 2 dollars or something more every month.

Anyway, I notice this article online advertising this new Prime X service, and I click on it and take a look to see what its all about, and for the most part, it looked like a good deal. The program was being tested in my city only, before they expanded it to a couple of other cities. You signed up, and if your address was close enough to the distribution warehouse, they would get your item to you by the end of the next day, sometimes even same day if they could swing it. It was a really good deal.

So I’m sitting here reading it, and I go ahead and sign up, because I figured that it would be interesting, and might make sense, since at the time, I did order a lot of stuff off Amazon: bulk packs of food like cheezits or popcorn, (You know the ones that come with like 200 packs?), and other stuff like various household items, laundry detergent. I figured that if I ever ran out of something, I could just order some, and if I could have it by the next day, they would save me a trip to the store.

I notice that while I’m signing up they have one of those notice boxes outlined in red where it says something like WARNING or whatever, so I read it and here’s what they have to say. They say that you need to mail them a check for the payment, because the system was so new it had a bunch of errors and they were afraid that the payment would fail. Keep in mind this was the first or second day that prime X was even being tested, so although I doubted such a large company like Amazon would run into problems like that, I went along with it because I really wanted to try it out. I whip out my checkbook and go ahead to write them the check, and then fill out an envelope to mail it out to them. I sent the thing in the mail, and leave it at that for the day. I figured that it would all work out okay once they got the check, and that I would just go back to online payments as soon as they made them work.

The next morning I get up and check my email, and I read an email something to this degree: Thank you for signing up for Amazon prime X: our new premium amazon prime experience currently in testing. We regret to inform you that we were unable to process the check, and as such will need to return the check back to you. However, we do appreciate your intended patronage, and as such, will be sending your payments back by courier tomorrow, so that you can personally verify the payment, and that we will be able to process it. Under normal circumstances, we usually require customers to stop by our processing office in order to verify, but since this program is in such an early state of development, our offices are not set up for these operations. The courier will show up, and just require an additional account number and another signature. After this, your account will be upgraded to Prime X level. Thank you, Prime X team.

Luckily it was a day that I didn’t have much going on, and I was planning to stay home all day anyway, and since I really wanted to be a part of this program, I went ahead and tried to keep an ear out for the doorbell all day. At some point during the day, I get hungry, but not like totally hungry, just kinda snacky. You know the kind of snacky you get when you want something salty? That’s kinda how I was feeling. So I go downstairs and start microwaving a bag of popcorn.

Now let me take a minute away to tell you about my microwave. This thing was a state of the art machine, lemme tell ya. It had a stainless steel interior, coated with this solution to keep it from sparking, but because of that, the aesthetic was really nice and it looked super sleek. Thing was, because of the steel inside, when you made popcorn, or really anything for that matter, the food would make so much noise you could hardly hear yourself think. Forget having a conversation in the same room. So I’m making my popcorn and looking out the window when all of a sudden I hear my doorbell ring. I go up and there is the Prime X courier, standing there with my check in hand and his signature sheet ready to go. I couldn’t believe that he was real, it just felt so strange that a company so large would send a man specifically to pick up one signature, but he was there alright. I open the door, and just then the first kernels in my popcorn bag start popping and making the horribly loud noise as they are tend to do. We get through the conversation just by yelling over the popcorn, and he closes up and goes on his way, presumably back to the warehouse or office, or wherever he was headed next.

I really think the whole situation was so absurd, but truth be told, there was actually a song written about the incident. See, the courier that they had sent, turns out he was actually a musician, struggling to make it and hit it big, and happened to be working as a deliveryman for the Prime X wing of Amazon at the time, and ended up being my guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had heard the song, and not realized that you had. It’s pretty famous, and I’m sure you would know it once you hear it. It goes a little something like this:
