Dear Oppo, the recent glut of S2000 posts around here have made me desire to own one. But much like the GTO, owners think they are worth their weight in gold. What should I buy instead?

Kinja'd!!!

Needs: convertible or t-top, newer than 2003, rwd or awd, good handling, nice interior, 0-60 under 6.5; $7,000 max purchase price. NOT A MIATA.

Wants: rear seat, more reliability than a Fiat

NC Miata with a 2.5L swap , though that’d be hard with your budget. Maybe a Z4 3.0si if you can find one?

You might be able to find a rough-around-the-edges Mazdaspeed Miata .

Other options that would be fun would be a MR2 Spyder with a 2ZZ swap, or a 350Z if you can forgive your convertible requirement (don’t buy the 350z ragtop).

Or find a slightly larger budget and get the nicest S2000 you can with a rebuilt title .

FWD can be fun...

Alternately, 350z/Mustang GT convertible.

Jaguar XK8? Audi S4 cabrio? M3 cabrio? I’m basically going down the list of cars only slightly less likely to burst into fire than a fiat....

Ooooo, mustang GT converti- wait, it has a log for a rear suspension so that’s out....

350z convertible/boxster/Z3/Z4 are your best bets.

An Abarth, well a 21st century one, is more likely to be reliable than all those cars...

With the year, price, and roofless constraints, it’ll be hard to find anything that competes with the S2000 in terms of sports car level performance... You could probably find a 1 or 3 series convertible. Maybe high mileage automatic C5 vette.

Sebring convertible.

You could hit sixty in under 6.5 depending on what cliff you drove off of.

Challenging criteria but I have something suitable in my mind that meets all of them. This 2005 BMW M3 is currently been auctioned for ~3k$. Interior is nice too (but only if you like leather seats). The S54 engine is known to be a very reliable yet still quite powerful engine.

Mustang is the only thing coming to mind that might come close to comprehensively fitting the bill with relative ease and/or minor modifications.

If allowing some wiggle room, there are some other options like the 350Z/G35, MR2 Spyder, and a handful of picks from the Germans (BMW 1/3/Z, MB CLK, Audi A4/TT ... all of questionable reliability or TCO). Outside of that, not sure what to suggest outside of waiting to get lucky on a CL find or being okay with a non-clean title for stuff like the S2K.
