We got back from vacation Tuesday. While there, we spent a day at the National Air Force Museum. It’s a tough putt with kids, as they don’t let you bring food or water in, and it’s HUUUUUGE! We did maybe 65% of it. It is also amazing. Here are some highlights.

My son and I went a few weeks ago as part of our Midwest vacation (12 days, 3,200 miles). We got there 5 minutes after it opened (after a drive from Ft. Wayne) and left as they were locking the doors. I’ve got hundreds of photos, and one of these days I’ll post them. The new hangar is amazing. I’ve written about most of the planes there. My favorite was actually the Fisher P-75 Eagle.

I was staggered by how huge the place was. The Cold War hanger was my favorite, but the plane that shocked me the most was the Valkyrie. The pictures do not do justice to how enormous it is!

I was really excited to see the Valkyrie. My wife and I had been to the museum 25 years ago, long before there was room to display it. I think you could take a bus to a remote hangar, but we didn’t do it.

I spent some time talking to a few of the docents. Nice guys, and mostly knowledgeable (one guy knew next to nothing, though). I discussed the lighting with one of them. I was wondering why the other rooms were so dark, but the new hangar was so bright. He said that the new hangar has LEDs, while the old ones have standard stage lighting, very high in the ceiling. They will eventually upgrade the lighting in the other hangars. However, the super-bright lights in Hangar 4 made for some real photographic challenges, as did the darkness of the other rooms. It would be nice if they could find something in between.

Also, my son and I both had the Afterburner for lunch. I thought that was an appropriate name for a chili cheese dog.

Oftentimes, it’s the smaller things that one tends to miss that can be so important. In the WWI room, they had a display of the Liberty L-12 engine, a V-12 that was designed for high power-to-weight and ease of manufacturing and powered a host of WWI, interwar, and WWII planes, trucks, tanks, you name it. It was one of America’s most enduring contributions to the war effort in both wars.

The Air Force Museum is one of my favorite places on earth. I could live there.

We were wondering why the lightning was so different. That makes sense.

So you came to Dayton and enjoyed your trip?

You know I drive by the AF museum every day on my way to work. Sometimes I go in to see if the case hiding on the wall that showcases what I actually did in Iraq has grown. For now Its a mere glass case with a few pics and misc info. Hopefully one day it’ll show the truth behind a convoy/gun truck mission. It’ll honor the fallen.

I live in Dayton and semi enjoy it here. May have let you drive my Hellcat. Since I got my bike I havent drove it. Its been the purple parking spot eater as a neighbor put it. Now Im back to driving it and miss 2 wheels.

That you for your service, whatever it was that you did.

We did enjoy our trip. We spent most of it in the Springfield/Yellow Springs area, visiting a friend who moved back there recently. It was a good little vacation.

I would’ve loved to meet you. Even a ride in a Hellcat would be amazing. Purple is the best color for them. Maybe sometime in the future. We could very well go back.

Yea I ride thru those areas alot with a group of friends. Mostly back roads and seeing who can get the most lean on their bike without laying it down. Im up to 52 degrees of lean.

My hellcat is fun but all i ever get is ricers who rev at me.

I went purple because back in the day my grandpa had a plum crazy cuda. So i went purple to match that. My friends call it Barney. Even put a sticker on the window. Its fun but hardly ever use its full power. Just put around town and do what I need to do.

Hell my red key sits at home most of the time. Dont ever feel I need to use full power when the highest speed on my trip to work is 45.

I’d like to see you paint that on a bomber today. I’m surprised they allow it to stand at the museum. I mean, nowadays, it’s bad even to say Jap when talking bout our WWII enemies in that context. Just an observation.
