I do lots of driving at night, this is one thing that bugs every time.

Kinja'd!!!

Fog Lights, they are great things. They help in fog, & rain. Also with seeing more to the side at night. 90% of cars with equipped with don’t have them on. Mine are always on at night, even when its clear. Come fall the deer will be every where, so they help me see them by the edge of farm fields.

I always leave mine on. Added illumination in front of the car.

I have DRL’s for that. Mine come on with the headlights, I can’t turn them on by them selves.

I should clarify. My fogs come on with either the parking lights or headlights. I have DRLs, which are the turn signals, for daytime and the fogs are set to always be on when the headlights are on. Rarely ever use the parking lights only, since the headlights and what not are automatic.

Except fog lights aren’t directed/cutoff the way headlights are so you’re blinding oncoming drivers just as badly as with your high beams.

I’m glad I don’t have to drive much at night any more. I find all of the misaligned, never readjusted after the bro lift, and aftermarket lights to be somewhat blinding. If they enforced the headlight laws like they enforce the tint laws around here, it would be a much more tolerable place to drive at night.

Illegal in OK:

The law plainly prohibits the use of fog lamps except under (certain) conditions. Title 47 O.S. § 12-217(D) provides:

D. 1. A motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two front fog lamps or two rear fog lamps which shall only be used when visibility, as described in paragraphs 3 and 4 of subsection A of this section, is limited to one-half (1/2) mile or less .

(all emphasis added). The reference to “paragraphs 3 and 4 of subsection A” leads us to the following language:

A. As used in this article:

3. “Front fog lamp” means a lamp mounted to provide illumination to the front of a motor vehicle during conditions of rain, snow, fog, dust, or other atmospheric disturbances ;

I’m imagining the Juke without the headlights now and using the fogs as the heads, and honestly I think you flatten that hood out a little and it would be kinda cool to have the grille above the headlights.

Mine aren’t really fog lights since they’re the same color as the headlights, but they are as bright as if not brighter than the headlights and they cast light really well off to the sides as you mentioned, so I always leave them on.

My car has automatic headlights, but the fog lights are a push button switch that defaults to off. Unlike most cars with automatic lights where the fog lights are a physical switch that you can leave in the on position so the fogs come on automatically with the headlights, on my car, you have to press the fog light button to turn them on, even though the headlights are automatic.

Well, that’s the default behavior. I had my car re-coded so the fogs always come on with the headlights. Now there’s no way to turn them off.

Mine are wired so they will come on when the head lights are on, but they default to off when I turn on my head lights.

In my 3 I wired my fogs to be allowed to be on with the highbeams. So much near the front of the car was missed by not having them on.

Same with my Ram’s headlights.... I might have to look into wiring them up too.

Some people hate those that use fog lights when its not foggy and I’ll never know why.

On my wife’s Impreza, the fog light switch is this ring to the right of the headlight switch (this pic is an Outback but same idea):

Kinja'd!!!

With the headlights on auto and the fog lights set to on, the fog lights turn on and off with the headlights. With the fog light switch to on, the fogs turn on and off with the headlights, and with the switch to off, they do nothing. This is ideal.

On my 335xi, the light switch is like this:

Kinja'd!!!

The default for the fog push button is off, so there is no way whatsoever to get automatic fog lights, except with the re-coding that I did to have them always come on with the headlights.

The Juke headlight/foglight stalk appears to be much the same as the Subaru one, but with no auto headlights.

In Floriduh, drivers spend millions of man-hours driving after sunset without headlamps lit and spend millions of man-hours driving in rain without headlamps lit.

Half an hour after sunset, and/or in rain, through our tinted windows, we’re supposed to see beige, pewter, silver, medium-grey, dark-grey, dark blue, and black vehicles on grey roads with dim backgrounds.

Advice from my friend that is an engineer at Hella:

Fog lights illuminate directly in front of the vehicle when there is limited visibility so you can see road markings. When it is clear your attention is supposed to be down the road - not right in front of the vehicle. If something is close enough to be illuminated by the fog lights while traveling at speed, you’re probably going to hit it anyway.
