18 cu. ft. of whatever. It’s black and it keeps things cold which is probably all that I can ask of it. I know I wasn’t going to get stainless steel with an icemaker, lower freezer and French doors, so I can’t complain. At least it’s new so it shouldn’t fail in the next several years.

French doors are worth it.

FRIDGELOPNIK

Several years back, my parents were looking for just what you wanted: Stainless steel, French doors, freezer at the bottom with an ice maker, and NO external doodads on the doors.

It took like 6 months to find one. They had to special order it, and it was insanely expensive. I think it was made by Whirlpool.

As long as the beer is cold, nothing else matters. You don’t put ice in beer anyway.

Stainless, French doors, full-size ice maker, bottom freezer.

This is the one we have, except our is counter depth. However, I’m not a fan of these new-fangled refrigerators. The old ones were just fine.

On a totally unrelated note, how was your stop in St. Louis? Where did you end up visiting? Any good meals? Did my recommendations come in handy?

Last weekend I tried to stop by the Boeing store on the north side of the airport. Closed. Monday through Friday only now which isn’t too bad since I’m off work at noon, but it’s still a bit of a haul to get up that way from the neighborhood where I live and work...

That’s still tiny, you need a 8' x 12' walk in fridge.

Years ago, at a Salvation Army store in Torrance CA, they had some massive Traulsen commercial-grade glass door refrigerators for sale, something like this:

I love the industrial aesthetic, and in my perfect house I’ll have something like this.

This is like ours that we got when we first bought the house, except ours had an ice maker inside, and the freezer is a drawer on the bottom. We got it cheap on sale. Our ice doesn’t taste very good, and we’d like one with a water dispenser, and all those other goodies, but the one we have keeps chugging along flawlessly. So, we’ll keep it going on 17 years now.

I would’ve gotten a barebones fridge too but the wife was having none of that. I still cringe at the thought of my bank account every time I get a beer.

I actually have the same one but in stainless steel. Been having some problems with it though, freezer would have all this condensation freezing up and sometimes it makes some clicking noise when the fan stops. But performance doesn’t seem affected so I didn’t bother looking further.

Back in the mid ‘90s my parents did a pretty substantial remodel on their house - crown molding, hardwood floors, granite counter tops, new appliances, swirly plaster ceilings, etc., basically all the luxury touches that the house should have had when it was built a decade and a half earlier. One of the things that my mother always wanted was one of those fancy Sub Zero refrigerators, complete with paneling on the front to match the rest of the cabinetry. She’d never had a side-by-side, and decided to get one this time. Bzzt - wrong answer. A month after having dropped $6K on this thing she started to hate it. Too small inside, too tall and compartmentalized. She experienced first-hand all the things that kept her from buying this style in the first place, and I still have no clue why she chose it.

They ended up getting a basic $400 unit from Costco to keep in the garage. Refrigerator white, literally, and about as basic as you can get (although a bit larger than the one I got today). Now they have a place to keep bulk items and stuff that won’t fit in that massive-on-the-outside, tiny-on-the-inside Sub Zero.

But there’s another problem. My mother, despite being of Polish and Ukrainian ancestry, is an expert in Asian cooking, and as such has lots of unusual items in the kitchen. Sauces, fish, home made kimchi, etc. - lots of rather stinky stuff, dare I say. My dad doesn’t care for the smell of the ingredients when he opens the fridge, although he does like the end product. To get around this problem they get yet another refrigerator, a smaller one like you’d have in a home bar, for stinky stuff and misc. drinks.

So, in summary, two people in a 3,500 sq ft house, with three refrigerators. Yeah, slight overkill...

One of the things listed in the ad for this apartment was that it had stainless steel appliances. Umm, no. The only thing that was close was the previous fridge, and it was just painted silver and was not stainless steel.

Perhaps they got the listings mixed up. I just found out that the property owners actually have about four properties in the area, and they might have been using the wrong ad when listing this property.

St. Louis was great. The first day we drove from Branson to Eureka and did Six Flags. On our only full day, we spent many hours at the City Museum, where we barely scratched the surface, and then went up in the Arch. We had dinner at Surgarfire, which was excellent. We were going to go to a different place (don’t remember the name) but it was closed. The next morning we went to the Prologue Room before heading to Ft. Wayne.
