Throwout bearing decided to blow up on me on my way into work this morning. Was able to limp it to the nearest dealership for service. (less than a quarter of a mile from where it failed) Hopefully they can get it fixed by the end of the day, otherwise I’ve got an expensive trip home after work.

Had it been making a lot of noise beforehand? How many miles are on your BRZ?

No, nothing could hear over anything else in the car, or sounded out of place. I have around 58k on the car so far. Apparently it’s not an uncommon point of failure though.

Now I’m paranoid that I should just have my e30s clutch done. It makes a rattle sound with the clutch engaged and car in neutral. I’ve read on some forum threads its a normal thing the getrag 260s do, some say it isn’t.

From what I read on the throwout bearing issues it only makes noise when the pedal is pressed down. I did not notice any out of the ordinary sounds though until it failed today. Only reason I’m sure its the throwout bearing is because the failure symptoms fit. I’m super paranoid about my car having issues, so I’m surprised this just happened without warning.

Ya that makes sense since the bearing is only engaged when pedal is down. There is just no definitive answer on the getrag rattle at least I know I’m not the only one with it. I was going to buy a used trans that supposedly didn’t rattle, but decided fuck it just drive this trans until it doesn’t work. It sounds terrible idling at stop lights when its warmed up though.

Kind of the known issue with BRZs. Mine went super early too, so I replaced it, the clutch, and the flywheel with an exedy one.

Eventually I plan on replacing the clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing fork and pressure plate with aftermarket units, but that’s not until I start building some power. I plan on staying NA so I won’t need anything too over the top, but I would like to increase the reliability.

Seems worth it to do it while the transmission’s dropped to me. A clutch isn’t expensive. Pulling the tranny is. Upgrading my pressure plate made a huge difference to the feel of the clutch for the better.
