Similar to my 01 Golf. The exhaust sounded like somebody shaking a jar of marbles for a long time, then it magically stopped, once all the bits and pieces of the cat fell out. Problem solved!

OK, OPEN QUESTION/THREADJACK TIME:
- How long do cat’s last?
- I’ve heard they rattle when they go? Could this rattling be only when turning a specific direction, or would it be constant?
Got a rattle I figured was a heat shield loose... Had it for a couple months. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get under and see on account of buggering my shoulder good and proper a couple months ago (convenient!). Just the other day I heard a noise like a piece of metal bouncing as I was making a turn in a parking lot, figured I’d run over something and thrown it... but the rattle was much less noticable after that. So... yeah.
In any case, something is loose somewhere, whether inside or outside. I’m going to have to take a look, but if anyone can give me an idea of what to look FOR it would be greatly appreciated.

Often the first mechanical failure is the bond of the catylist substrate (the honey comb bit) to the wall of the housing. When that happens the substrate will bounce around in the bottle shaped housing sort of long ways. this bouncing around further damages the substrate as well as further decay from the exhaust temperatures that damaged it initially
