Or not. You decide . For me, personally, I’m fine with auto-pods as long as it looks like no car ever made, and not based on an existing automobile.

I mean, people are idiots. Even those of us who concentrate while driving and take pride in it, are prone to moments of stupidity. But I’d sooner accept the risk than have ANOTHER aspect of my life decided for me.

What I see in that is “People running into each other for no reason” and then several paragraphs describing the reason.

Personally, if we have to have autonomous cars, make autonomous cars. Until then, cut this second-guessing interfering “active driver aid” bullshit.

He’s not wrong. But that headline is potentially misleading. Obviously, he’s talking to car guys about HAVs being a punishment for poor driving. But there are people out there who think that we “deserve” autonomous vehicles because it’s allegedly “not our fault” that humans are “incapable” of driving well. To those people, HAVs are not a punishment, but our saviour.

But as Jack points out, 99% of crashes are 100% avoidable. They only happen because people cannot drive. Actually no, “cannot” is very much the wrong word here. It’s not an inherent inability to drive; it’s a total dropping of the ball in terms of driving behavior. People are making bad decisions when it would be just as easy to make good decisions.

STOPPING for a red light is easy. YIELDING to someone who has right-of-way is easy. NOT driving drunk is easy. Putting the phone DOWN is easy. We don’t need autonomous vehicles to save us from ourselves; we already have everything we need to eliminate almost all crashes. We’ve (it’s a team effort) just got to get our heads out of our asses.

Self driving cars are a band aid solution. Public transport is where its at.

That being said, I would gladly give up my right to drive if it meant that I knew I’d never have to get a call that a loved one or friend got killed in a car accident. Back when we were dating my wife got into a head on collision. (Other drivers fault). THAT is not a call you want to get.

However, that is a pipe dream. You’d have to convert EVERYONE to self driving cars, and there are SO MANY moving pieces to that puzzle. Ex. How are poor people who rely on their beaters to get them to their job(s) going to afford self driving cars? If self-driving cars become a service and cars are owned by corporations, then what will independent contractors or people who have to carry around specialized equipment from place to place do? What about people who live outside of cities and on unpaved roads? You really only have to go an hour outside of most major cities to find people who live like that.

I’m not trying to be a negative nancy about self driving cars, I truly think such a system COULD work if there was enough planning, cooperation, education, and most importantly, MONEY. But, I know enough to know the world doesn’t work like that, and I believe the actual implementation will be much different and worse than most people are expecting.

My thoughts are we need to have a two tier drivers test for the future. The people who can pass the first tier with acceptable skills will be allowed to have any automobiles and trucks of their choice, normal or autonomous. The second tier people who suck at driving will be forced to have autonomous cars only, no if ands or buts. If those sucking drivers want to train and retest they will be allowed to after a suitable waiting period determined by each state. The driving tests will be like that in Germany. You would be required to attain a passing grade from a High Performance Drivers Education course before being allowed to drive. No more Mom and Pop I can teach you to drive to the grocery store type crap will be allowed and there will be mandated drug tests every 6 months to keep a license.

Part of me likes this idea, part of me is worried such an idea can be weaponized for political ends.

Do you agree though that the roads would be much safer? And politicians can weaponize just about anything. At least with my tiered approach those of us who want to own a performance car will still be allowed to instead of being forced into a self driving box. My other idea is for the future we finally go with the Disney vision of monorail or other electric powered track public transports for all those that can’t pass the test or afford the self drivers. These systems could be readily copied by looking at Belgiums system. With this being said we would also need more bike racks all over our city scapes.
