Now you can build your own! With only three airworthy examples surviving (and some report only one), it is hoped that others can be fully restored to flight using the drawings.

Ah, the one instance where an LS swap wouldn’t be as good.

Can’t replace that Merlin sound.

I’ve considered the feasibility of this before. The Mossie is actually *much* more kit-buildable than a lot of its contemporaries just on the basis of its construction, and a couple of trips to a specialty veneer company and Aircraft Spruce and Specialty later...

Having accurate dimensions means it’ll be easy to scale for a 3/4 or similar, but the work of making a full size accurate fuselage is also simply a matter of making the concrete forms to spec and laying the veneers. Not really that hard.

I love technical drawings as art. I have a whole stack of drawings of valves and fittings from the old Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee. It would be awesome if they offered a high-res version of some of these drawings.

I do, too. Back in HS (1980s), I entertained the thought of becoming a draftsman. I loved working with the triangles and T-squares and pencils, though it’s all done by computer now. A few weeks ago, we went to the Prologue Room at the Boeing offices in St. Louis. On my way out, I noticed this framed original drawing done by none other than Donald Douglas. I can’t tell if it’s something he actually tried to build or built, but it’s a fantastic work of art in its own right.

I used to call on an ancient paper mill up in Niagara, WI (now demolished) and in their engineering department they had a wall-sized drawing of their original paper machine. All hand-drawn. It was amazing. I wonder what happened to it.

This simple, somewhat arcane piece of news – totally unrelated to my past, my everyday life or my future as a person – has just made me stupidly happy.

This is just what Oppo needed today.

Probably pulled down or papered over. Very sad. When I was doing drafting in high school, I took great joy in a perfect line weight, a sharp corner, a symmetrical arrowhead. It is both art and skill. As a musician, I use software to typeset music, and I still go in and move notes and change spacings to make it look more human. Computers have taken the human element out of these sorts of things. It’s kind of sad.

Probably not getting 1,500 HP out of an LS at 3,000 RPM, either. :)

This is awesome - even more awesome if it leads to 1 or more Mosquitos becoming airworthy again!

I hope they make them public. The scale modelers will have a field day with it. They would also be suitable for framing.

I’d love a framed print of that. The section at the bottom is interesting - -seems to imply that the aircraft is symmetrical, which I suppose it is, being a twin. Singles only look symmetrical.

I’m sure there is a companion drawing that shows the other wing. Hell, there were 20,000 drawings. The real trick to building one of these from scratch would be recreating the concrete molds that were used to shape the wood laminate fuselage.

20,000 - wow! But that makes sense for a complicated machine—

Every part custom made. Gotta have a drawing for that.

And back then, they would have been making most of those parts, rather than buying subassemblies, too - other than the Merlins.
