If the transmission is kaput, I keep it and register it as non-running. It becomes my project car. I take the bus everywhere until I can afford a new car. Good thing the registration expires in September.
If the transmission itself is fine and it’s just a switch/solenoid, then I just keep it and drive it until I can afford a new car and get rid of it.
