Just dropped it off at the dealership. They should tell me either today or tomorrow what they found. I’ve been thinking about what was going on.

Between D, D3, 2, and 1, the transmission wouldn’t move. Normally you’d be able to feel it changing gear, but in this case it was nothing. This is probably a good sign, because maybe it’s the shift solenoid or speed sensor, basically something minor and cheap that controls the transmission. If it was actually catastrophic transmission failure, then it would at least try to engage gear, wouldn’t it?

Also, it’s only at ~118,000 miles. A transmission failure, even for this car, shouldn’t happen so early. The recall went through and the transmission was replaced long before I got it. Also it’s running Genuine Honda ATF-DW1 fluid, not some off-brand ATF-DW1/Z1 *equivalent*.

This gives me hope. I don’t have much money to buy a replacement car. Even Zoidberg’ Tercel doesn’t seem too certain.

So in the words of the great shitposting masters, pls pray 4 me.

What are the chances you didn’t put enough fluid in it when you changed it out? That’s like the lowest common denominator in this situation.

A friend of mine had an 03 Accord EX V6 coupe, bought new, his first new car a few years out of school. Promptly at ~65K miles, it puked a transmission. Replaced under warranty. He miled it up to about 150K with no further mechanical issues (although the transmission always made kind of a whining sound), but then started having constant electrical issues, and moved on when the car was 9 years old. Good luck, his was a good car when it was 100%.

My transmission has a slight whine, but it’s been like that for at least 30,000 miles so I’m not worried about that.

I’m under the impression that all Honda auto transmissions from the 2000's are doomed to fail before 150k. I know several people with Accords that have been in a similar situation.

I’ve seen examples that have surpassed 150k and some that have even made it past 200k.

People who don’t take care of their cars are doomed. I take care of my car.

My aunt and uncle had a Pilot that made it to 230k or so before the transmission stopped transmitting. Not too shabby.

What are the chances it leaked out or drained deeper into the trans since then?

Good luck.

As an odd aside: The fact you changed the fluid could also be related. Many problems I’ve seen happened after a change for some reason that I don’t understand.

Is it checked when warmed up and running right? It’s been a while since I’ve had an automatic car so I don’t remember. The one auto I had broke a cooler line and left me abandoned on the side of the road. Basically acted like your car, it was down 1 qt of fluid. fixed the line and added a qt, all was well. BTW in desperation I also added 1/2 quart of 20/50 oil, didn’t phase it.

Again, not much. When I changed the fluid, I poured most of what was needed in then I started the car and shifted through the gears to work the oil into the transmission. I then went little by little, again shifting through the gears, until I got to the right level.

Also the drain plug is torqued correctly, so the sump would have had to break for it to be leaking fluid, which it isn’t.

If there’s a bigger issue, ask to talk to the service manager (or zone rep if that doesn’t work) to see whether the warranty repairs were done properly. Sounds almost like they left pieces out.

And if you have to dump some money into it, you’ll have a dead reliable car. You’ll get a lot more miles out of it ...

I think it’s within spec, as my friend’s car did it for tens of thousands of miles. It always worried him though, he never trusted the car 100% after the failure (which of course happened hundreds of miles from home).

If it needs a new transmission, here’s something you might be able to try depending on how long you can go without a car (I did this myself a few years ago.)

The parts guy at South Tacoma Honda used to train techs on rebuilding transmissions. He sold me one he had (an EX to put in my LX) for $300. If your willing to try swapping the trans yourself, could be worth it.
