Looks like the insurance settlement means the Corolla is going away. Ballpark budget of 5k to get the Mrs. a new daily she will feel safe transporting our kiddos in, requirements below.

2 car seats, one front facing and one rear facing at this time.

Reliable, and cheap to maintain.

Must be in good cosmetic shape as the Mrs has a home based business

Transmission doesn’t matter but her last 3 cars  have been a manual.

I may also give her the cx5 and drive whatever we find.

How old is the younger kids? You need more room for the rear facing car seat, but that’s until 2 or so? If you only got another few months but plan on keeping this car for years, I wouldn’t plan around that. My current car sucks for the rear facing seat, but after November it won’t matter.

Um... is it Thursday already?

Definitely give her the CX5 and get something cool (but with back seats).

What do you like? Hot hatch? Muscle cars? German metal?

Tell her to up her game and she’ll have a pink Cadillac SRX soon :D

I’m going with just about any compact crossover, maybe Hyundai Santa Fe. They aren’t bad, sort of anonymous, but plentiful and cheap. Also RAV-4 and the like. Maybe CR-V, but prices on the Japanese models can be a little inflated.

That said, I’d probably just give her the CX-5 and take your time with shopping for yourself.

I’ll second this. With a budget of $5k (CAD? Metric dollars?) you can get something cool, with back seats and a manual transmission so both of you can enjoy it, even with the kids in it.

I’d say E46 sedan with a manual...
Or R53 Cooper S - huge inside for something so small, front wheel drive, and tremendous fun to drive. Decent examples are trading around $4500 US so $5k CAD could get you a decent driver.

I have an ‘06 Acura TL for sale in Philly for $6k. A little out of your budget but a nice car nonetheless.

Almost 3 and almost 1. A backseat is most certainly a thing that is required, so no Miata.

This is reliable, cheap, it be great for advertising her business everyone would look at it. You could put scrap yard mini van in the back to put the kids in. Do it.

I would love a got hatch but I have no space to wrench with our townhouse. I saw a Mazdaspeed protege that was turned and wanted to run screaming. I do live in emissions land.

I would love to wait but we need a replacement asap as the insurance company wants a decision on the settlement asap.

Suzuki grand vitara. Or an isuzu ascender. Basially go for a more obscure japanese SUV - ample room, cheap to buy, cheap to maintain.

Here’s what 5000$ gets you for a grand vitara - http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-Suzuki-Grand-Vitara-XSport-2WD-/112498413399?epid=109918489&hash=item1a316d8f57:g:xcMAAOSwXBtZelBM&vxp=mtr

And here’s an isuzu axiom. Because you definitely forgot about the isuzu axiom - http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Isuzu-Axiom-XS-/172737326421?hash=item2837f26d55:g:5sgAAOSwi8VZRpNF&vxp=mtr

I would love a hot hatch but am not seeing a lot around me that aren’t modded. If it’s my new daily I would like to add not appliance and not premium gas, my daily round trip commute is only about 25 miles. Japanese manufacturers are leading right now as I know nothing of early 2000s Volvo’s as there a bunch near me as well as a local independent Volvo mechanic.

How about a Mazda 5? IIRC they made them with a manual as well. It’s essentially just a Mazda 3 minivan.
