I was reading the wikipedia page on the Chevrolet C/K trucks and came across this passage, emphasis mine.
While all other C/K pickup models were dropped by 2000, the C3500 HD was produced until 2002 due to fleet demand. In the brochures it is referred to as Sierra Classic/Silverado Classic. There were two engine choices; The 8.1L Vortec Big Block replaced the Gen VI 7.4L Vortec Big Block and the venerable 6.5L Turbo Diesel.
While the 6.5 diesel might be somewhat reliable, but everything I have ever heard about them at best is “adequate”. Venerable I would reserve for engines like Ford’s 4.9 or 7.3, or Cummins 5.9, or if you want to stick with Chevy the 454 or 350, but definitely not the 6.5 diesel from the ‘90s.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go day dream about square bodies

Well, I think their usage here is in terms of “deserving” veneration in the sense of age, which if you count it as a slightly reworked 6.2 is certainly true - it was even with updates must truthfully a generation behind the other engine lines.
And yeah, they have abysmal power to weight ratios, specific output, and have a couple of really galling failures - any and all of the Stanadyne fuel filter setups, some injection pump issues, and block web cracks...

Eh...I think that’s a bit of a stretch. I’m guessing whoever wrote that either doesn’t know what venerable means or owns a truck with the 6.5L and has some sort of Stockholm Syndrome thing going on

I see “venerable” used in the sense of age and ubiquity all the time. I’d say I see it used *much less* in the sense of actually being deservedly good per se. Particularly in motoring press - they like to use bigger and less accurate words than are necessary.

I have such an irrational want for a 6.5 Pickup!! I want one so very badly! I would rather have the Suburban with the 6.5, but they only came with barn door rears and I hate those! So pick up with shell solves that problem.

Holy kinja...lol. I say “but why” to wanting a 6.5L powered truck...I’m all for square bodies and GMT400s though as long as they have a 350 or 454

I don’t know. I mean being a Turbo diesel it is far far better than the old 6.2. Plus with a bigger turbo and some work they make good power. I just like them for some reason. Yes i would prefer they had a 6.6, but they don’t so 6.5 sounds good to me.
